TOPIC: Stacking effects Net and Tanglefoot

Re: Stacking effects Net and Tanglefoot 16 years 2 weeks ago #13

I think it's common sense that they would stack. If you have a Weighted Net entangling you, and then you get a the Tanglefoot Bag, you should be more encumbered than if you just had the Weighted Net.

That said - I know the decision is probably more about game balance than common sense, and I'm sure that is what Dave is looking at, as well as being as consistent as possible.

tangled is tangled...it would be different if the TFB caused disorientation - but no it is also a tangle-type device.

I guess I don't really care how this ends up - but it might be fun to see these things stack and people actually use the items...but my common sense tells me - if weighted nets don't stack...well then anything that also tangles does not stack.

I think the way people are seeing it is like a guy being covered with a net first, he is encumbered and thrashing around trying to get out. Then you hit him with a tanglefoot which is like tying him up with a rope. Now all he can do is roll around on the floor.

Oooh... There's an idea. I wonder if I could make a lasso out of my large collection of rope and use that as a poor mans entanglement. Assuming I hit with the -4 to hit because of an unfamiliar weapon. DMs?

Just be aware that nets, like tanglefoot bags, are consumed upon use. So if you did get to use the rope as a poor-mans lasso I am sure it would be classified as destroyed per use.

Of course. Not that it's a problem considering how much rope any single person has if they've ever bought more than a couple or three bags of tokens.

And that is part of my logic...you start getting into these A+B rules...TD will just say - NO forget it - too complicated...no stacking is the KIS answer.

The KISS method is, by far, the best way to go in the TD situation I should think. I agree with you on that. The DMs in the rooms have enough crap to deal with as it is. Why make it tougher for'em?

Besides, what fun is a totally gimped critter? They'd just start throwing critters with razor sharp claws or spikes on their bodies at us and the entanglements wouldn't work at all.

Well - that's already out there....
we have several items for combatting ethereal creatures - can't throw a net on those.

True, but those are ethereal types. Imagine a giant mutated crab with claws on all its feet. It'd cut through any entanglement so quickly that it would be effectively unentangled and still able to attack. Or some sort of animated cactus with dagger like blades instead of needles. No way to entangle something like that. Or worse... a tentacled beast whose attacking tentacles can fit between the holes of the net and are too numerous to be tied down by a rope or tanglefoot.

=)

*starts shutting up as he's getting too many ideas in his head for critters that can't be entangled*

LOL... Yeah...

But not Edward Scissorhands. He was a misunderstood wimp. How about Grood Scissorshands, the Orc with an attitude ever since some dumbass Paladin cut off his hands and let him live. Some Orcish Priest fixed him up with dagger length scissors as hands.
