That isn't how the 4C was supposed to work.

I like the Medallion, I think it make for a perfectly good (perhaps Great!) 4C. I don't understand all the hate that is being thrown at it.

No one hates it, it's just that almost everyone likes something else better. That isn't how the 4C was supposed to work.

Ah, ok. I get your point. But I can't say that I agree with it.

The Medallion is the most powerful combo token that has ever come to pass in TD, the only expectation I had about the 4C token was that it should be better then any of the 3C tokens, in this I think the Medallion clearly succeeds.

As compared to the other neck items its functions are unique, and on any given run I would have to think hard before choosing which to use.

I think that's fundamentally a good thing. As TD grows we are going to end up with hard choices we will have to make about equipment we want to use before we go on a run, increasing the complexity (and for me the fun!) of planing for a run.
The only ways I could see the desire to use HoP being held in check would be by either:

a) making pulling from the treasure boxes worthless to the token rich (nothing above a rare in a treasure box)
b) make a super powerful common neck slot item that you nearly couldn't survive the game with out (I.E. if there was a common amulet of health that doubled your health, and then all of the dungeon damage was scaled up with the expectation that everyone would have that boost)

Plan "a" would wreck a fun part of the game (well it would only wreck it for the token rich...)
Plan "b" would wreak all other neck slot items.

I don't see either solutions as desirable. I much prefer the current tactic of using the bully-pulpit to call for restraint.

Edit:
From my past reading I don't think Jeff was overly displeased with loaning to others in your group, I saw the focus of his comment on loans outside of the group (I.E. put the break on this before people start renting HoP)

Or how about this: at the beginning of each GenCon, players have the option of "depositing" their Horn of Plenty with Jeff and True Dungeon. You get the Horn effect for each of your runs. At the end of GenCon, you pick up your Horn and you get a special little bonus, whatever that may be. The deposit procedure ensures that you aren't able to loan it out to others (since True Dungeon holds on to it for the remainder of GenCon). Of course you'd have to prepare something nice to convince players to deposit the Horn....

the liability on that is pretty BIG! Plus what about people saying they are only there for the day - getting the HoP back and then someone turning around and using that same HoP for the next day?

oh and that solution only prevents SOME loaning...I mean if someone has multiple HoP - they can still assign it to X number of people - and of course the above daily use issue comes into play too...

Hopefully the guidelines that Jeff suggested will work on an "honor system" basis (don't loan any Horns of Plenty unless you have multiples, in which case you can loan them out to people on dungeon runs in which you take part in - i.e. each Horn you own can be used when you do a Dungeon Run), and no further actions regarding the Horns will be necessary.

It's clear that TD is also trying to fix the Horn issue by putting the most powerful new tokens (Amulet of Wonder, Medallion of Greyhawk) in the neck slot also to get people to use them rather than the Horns. I think it's clear that if those items filled another slot (like ring or Ioun Stone) where they didnt compete with the Horns most people would be thrilled to use them. And there are surely a number of people that are using them over the Horn, or that don't have a Horn and are more than happy to use them.

So I take it you are not interested or would not participate in a "HoP trade-in" program - should TD decide to try that approach in tandem with everything else they are doing?
Except that as can be seen by this thread, the HoPs will continue to be loaned out, so it doesn't solve the problem.

The MoG is extremely powerful, but the HoP is powerful in the meta-game so it will always trump an in-game power. I would have far preferred a +2 hp ioun stone with no additional powers.

I think a voluntary "HoP trade in program" would soak up a nice number of these things (gone - out of game totally, like a do-over) - and make the collectors that got them as loaners feel as if they had been given a nice perk for the problem.

I know I would part with one of my 3 HoPs...and IF I had as many as some...I would part with more!

I think the only turn in that would work is for other meta-game items. Custom titles on the boards, a spot reserved in the tavern just for title-holders, ability to play a different race, that sort of thing.

I don't think I saw anything in this thread about anyone loaning out a HoP to anyone that isn't on the same Dungeon run that they are on - which I think is OK. Maybe I missed something.

I personally agree with you that the HoP will trump any in-game item, but that is not a universal opinion. I saw many people posting that they would use their Amulet of Wonder over the Horn of Plenty, and from what I saw in early posts, I think the Amulet of Wonder was one of, if not the, highest ordered PURP this year.
