But you need at least one of every item from every year in both gold and platinum back. Right?

Actually, I think that more and more people get the collecting bug each year. That is the market for the previous year's tokens: new collectors. Not to mention, there are new folks trying out TD each year.

But I do agree that consumables are nice. We tend to keep considerably more of each consumable than we do of the non-consumables. I don't think it makes sense to completely do away with perpetual items, but I do think it makes sense to creat mostly new ones for each year. The secondary market will make the older tokens available to new folks, and the new stuff will keep the collectors coming back to the trough year after year. Personally, I'm in favor of having only very limited duplication from one year to the next.
If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
I think that in a year or two the amount of tokens on the market will bring the desire of having and values way down. There are just too many items to choose from, that are not consumables, that one can use. For instance, do I use a + 1 long sword, +1 Mace, or +1 short sword? One would only use the best and leave the other unused and possbily unwanted. Why would one keep more than one of of any weapon token over a ten year run? If there were more consumables created and a great need for them in the adventure that would help hold a desire for non-consumable items. I know the following example can't happen to this extreme but say: If in 2009 all rares were consumables, these would eventually get used up, thus taking them out of the market. I am just thinking of the income for TD. Pretty soon they won't be getting as many buys on their tokens if there isn't a way to keep the need/desire up. Thoughts?

I completely agree that the value of some staple tokens like Rare +1 Weapons, Plate Armor, etc. will continue to drop every year as the overall supply increases. But, the answer isn't as simple as taking those tokens out of the print run, because True Dungeon also has to think of the new player, that is just starting this year, and the set has to contain those staple tokens so that they have a chance of getting them in their packs.

The only real answer is probably for something to be done to get a lot of those tokens out of the market, or to give them some kind of secondary value. One answer to that would be to have Combo Tokens that had a bunch of the tokens with over-supply as ingredients (like requiring 5-10 +1 Rare Weapons as ingredients).

Another option would be to assign tokens a nominal trade value (like give all +1 Weapons a 150 GP Value) and let them be traded in for reserve Gold Tokens - or just let them be used as currency at that trade-in value somehow at the auctions. I could imagine mega competition and bidding at the auctions if people were able to somehow convert lots of their excess tokens into GP for bidding purposes - and that would serve to get a bunch of excess tokens out of the market and help keep the supply and demand balanced.

A little early to say that token trading is down at this point. Like G. says this is of little concern anyway. I'm more concerned with TD getting people to buy tokens(like that would ever be a problem) so they can use that money to buy really cool stuff for the dungeon(thank you again Smack). I can't wait to see what's in there this year!

Yes, bring the token chart back. No, to take PYP away(HUH?).
I think that some people have put too much thought into this and d-u-n out thunked themselves over this.
It's been said earlier. When the combo token list and the 2008 token guide comes out, trading will probably spike.

It does seem to me that trading is a bit down this year - probably because it seems (so far) that fewer PLAT sets are being assembled. I started the thread because Jeff mentioned that he felt like there were fewer trading related posts. If everyone feels like trading is still doing gangbusters, that's great!

Interesting. I saw the same thing, such as with the Full Plates.
I suggested maybe using the 3rd year of this story arc to change work the story-line in with the scarcity of some of the tokens. In a war, how difficult would it be to find Plate mail that you could use?
My thought was to take certain tokens, such as the Full Plate out of circulation for a year. That drives the value back up and encourages trading for the out-of-circulation items. Similar to taking out many URs each year.

Other thoughts about the current rate of trade:
(note, many of these points have already been stated by others)

Tokens were available much earlier this year.
My guess is that mostly the token fiends are the ones buying this early.
We'll see more new purchasers as we get within a few months of the Con.
As previously pointed out, when the Combo lists go up, trading will increase.
I also think it is possible that more individuals purchased larger amounts this year (PYP at work, along with the GT), so more people ended up with more tokens, and many of those people are contect with what they received through random draws and have little need to trade for more.

From what I've seen, many of the big token buyers trade via PM inquiries and offers and not through posts, so many of those trades are not seen by the forum or the completed trades section therein.

Night

From experience I can say that I fall into this category. I've already doubled my purchases from a year ago. I'm the only one in my group of five that collects the tokens, so I am trying to have enough tokens to outfit five people. At this point I have enough so that everyone will be outfitted in pretty much all red. I'm up to eight purps at this point, so there is a smattering of that added to the mix, but nothing I can trade away. I have a lot of extra reds, but not of the ones everyone wants like Potion Death's Door or Belt of Retrieval. I've made a few trades just to help others with their plat sets and let me pick up a few extra consumables, but it's not really anything I absolutely need. The only thing I really need is more purps and people rarely trade those away for reds or gold. If they do, I probably can't match the offers being made by those with megaamounts of tokens.

So yeah, I'm content with the reds I have and people trading purps without getting one in return are few and far between. I know last year they thought about the program of exchanging 25 reds for an ultrarare. I'm mostly against that because I think it would devalue the ultrarares, but part of me knows that if they were doing that I'd easily be able to get a few extra ultrarares at this point.
". . . 25 reds for an ultrarare."

If the UR was not one of the 20 in the set we have seen thus far, then that would rock! I would not want the ones we got from the pick-your-purple program to go down in value. This would mean that we would likely trade in mounds of +1 weapons, Thunderstones, and Keen Edge Scrolls! Even a lower-powered purple would be cool!

Doing so would lighten the load of our collections. I know you all don’t like toting it all about.

Let us see what tokens we get to trade in when the combination list is announced.

[move] :blob1: [/move]
