TOPIC: Increasing Trading

Re: Increasing Trading 16 years 1 month ago #13

think a better solution would be to make more consumables - people will be more likely to burn a token that they have plenty of, even if it's red. And then they will need to trade for them again...

That is why I am in the produce business. People eat it and then they have to buy again. Hand grenade manufacturers and I have a lot in common. There is nothing better to sell than something that self destructs. I love the scenario. I just have to figure out what they want again and again.

Hey - some of us are germaphobes... if tokens were really made of nilla wafers or gummy disks, I would just buy new ones every run and never ever do any trading. hmmm... problem solved?

I've always wanted a grenade. Not necessarily to do anything with but just to have. You know. Just in case.

The thought of you with a grenade...

Is probably close to the same as me with an M1 Garand! =D

Are people really concerned that trading is down??

Actually I thought that trading is up. Building PLAT sets is something that collectors really have to work for - and aside from John being quiet this year - I still think that is going on.

Could it be that more folks have increased token buys - I know Jeff is selling out quicker than he thought he would...and isn't that something we should be concerned with over secondary market trades?

I guess I haven't noticed a lack of trades...other than to say that yes - I think we see some decrease because the PURPS are not quite up to snuff like they were last year...also last year was the INTRODUCTION of chippies - so folks were really building sets and trading from wood to chippie.

Now that said - I would be happy to see the return of the token list thingy - but I would not use it other than to post my wants...which right now might just be a couple of PLATs.

As for tossing the PYP - I'd say that is a major selling feature that would drop sales...remember folks like getting a specific item for their spends...and some just want 1-2-3 of the PURPS anyway...so they are not a big part of the trade frenzy IMHO.

I don't think that trading is necessarily down. Bear in mind that it's been less than a month since everyone got their tokens. I think once we hit May or so, trading will pick up considerably. And not only that, a LOT of trading happens at GenCon in person. And I agree with Gary about the appeal of the platinums. The collectors will trade actively to complete those sets.

Could it be that more folks have increased token buys - I know Jeff is selling out quicker than he thought he would...and isn't that something we should be concerned with over secondary market trades?

I can only speak for myself, but my token buys have definitely gone up. Don't consider myself a tokenholic (yet), but having broken down and ordered a third wave this year is definitely something new for me. Speaking of which, anyone else's tokens take a scenic route during delivery? I placed my third wave order on Monday and received my tracking information Monday night. I live in Wisconsin and seeing as how True Adventure is in Illinois I thought I might even see them by today. Instead I just got an update that they were scanned in Chatanooga, TN last night. I know we got some more snow yesterday, but didn't think that would scare them away. =)

As far as more trading. I've done a couple of trades, but really want to see what I need for combos before trading away something I might need.

I am convinced that the Post Office keeps an eye out for anything with True Adventures as the address label, and sends them on the longest route detour possible.
They are evil (and not in a good way) and must be destroyed.

My tokens were at the Downtown Indy post office last night. Lets see, 16 miles from there to the Noblesville post office, so I expect the tokens on next Wednesday.

(Token whining update)

The tokens were not able to make it from Downtown Indy to Noblesville in one day. Amazing.

If I got in a hot air balloon with a telescope I could see the Downtown post office from here.

I think that in a year or two the amount of tokens on the market will bring the desire of having and values way down. There are just too many items to choose from, that are not consumables, that one can use. For instance, do I use a + 1 long sword, +1 Mace, or +1 short sword? One would only use the best and leave the other unused and possbily unwanted. Why would one keep more than one of of any weapon token over a ten year run? If there were more consumables created and a great need for them in the adventure that would help hold a desire for non-consumable items. I know the following example can't happen to this extreme but say: If in 2009 all rares were consumables, these would eventually get used up, thus taking them out of the market. I am just thinking of the income for TD. Pretty soon they won't be getting as many buys on their tokens if there isn't a way to keep the need/desire up. Thoughts?
