TOPIC: Increasing Trading

Increasing Trading 16 years 1 month ago #1

Hi Everyone!

If there is a concern that there isn't as much trading on the forums as there used to be, and a desire to increase the amount of trading, I can think of two changes that might stimulate trading. I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks of these two changes, and other things they can think of to stimulate trading.

1. Put back in place the database where everyone could enter the tokens that they have, the tokens that they are willing to trade, and the tokens that they are looking for. That database was amazingly useful and fun - I remember wanting to trade for many different tokens (like a +1 Heavy Crossbow) and getting on the database to see everyone that had one available. Then I was able to make trade offers based on the tokens they were listing as wanting. If this database were put back in place, then I really do think it would spark a LOT more trading. If there were a site once again where people could find everyone that had the tokens they were looking for available, and see what those people wanted, I think that there would be a surge in trading.

2. Make the PYP a random PURP pick instead. The main reason people trade is to get tokens they want and don't have, and to get rid of tokens they have and don't want/need. But, by letting everyone pick the exact PURPs they need, there is no reason to trade for them anymore because they already have just what they want. If people got a Random PURP, I think there would be a LOT of trading as they tried to get the ones they really wanted. The big question on this is whether sales would drop if people couldn't get the PURP of their choice, but as I recall, last year when the PYP with to a Random PURP, sales stayed at a high level.

Anyone agree/disagree with those options, or have other thoughts on stimulating trading?

Thanks,
Mike

LOVE the first idea. Great not only for trading but also personal inventory management!

Not so thrilled about the second idea. If the Purps were all roughly equal in value and use, then randomized purples might work. But I'd be a bit miffed if I spent $250 and got a "crappy" UR as my randomized purple (i.e. Gem of Healing, Elixer of Life, or Sapphire Necklace last year, Hourglass of Imprisonment this year). And imagine the potential backlash and discontent if Horns of Plenty had not been readily available last year (then people would really be hyping the "Black Lotus" comparison). For me personally, the Pick Yer Purp program is the biggest draw for placing a reasonably sized order. Without that, I'd probably rely more heavily on eBay, purchasing from others, or trading, rather than pre-ordering and buying bulk packs of tokens.

Anyway, the "00" purps *are* randomized. And those who buy enough to Pick Their Purp already have a reasonable chance at getting one of those randomized "00" purps (which would provide an incentive to trade). So I'd say it's relatively moot.

The volume of Purp trading is also much smaller (for obvious reasons). And the demographic you're targeting is not necessarily representative of the players that need to trade more. So I personally don't think this approach would be necessary or particularly effective.

Just my $0.02. (which is worth even less nowadays b/c of the crappy exchange rates)

I agree with Incognito. One of the reasons I got drawn in to bigger purchases with my last 2 buys was because of the PYP.

I also agree with Incognito. I know personally I would have purchased much fewer tokens without PYP. Getting a bad random purp means you have much less in trade value and still woudn't be able to trade for what you need.

I do like the first idea.

I too agree with Incognito

Would love to see the trading database working once more.

I do love the PYP, and it was the prime reason I spent the funds I did this year in advance. And I would agree if I got less than desirable tokens I would feel gipped. If it was random I think I would have spent half as much as I did and then wait for ebay to list out the ones I really needed.

I think if True Dungeon had gone from just having "00" bags to having Random PURPs with every $250 in sales, people would be VERY happy about it. Now that PYP has been in place for two years, there would certainly be a lot of unhappiness if it went from PYP to random PURP.

The only solution to that issue would be to increase the numbers of random purples. If there were "random" purples in every 12 bags instead of every 100 people might be willing to buy bags to get purples that they could trade. Rare Tokens will be dead as far as trading is concerned after this gencon. There will just be too many in circulation.
You make a very valid point, and now that I think on it I would agree, it's just hard to take away a person's choice once they have been given the freedom to make it.

And if you increase the availability of purps like that, the same will happen with them...

I think a better solution would be to make more consumables - people will be more likely to burn a token that they have plenty of, even if it's red. And then they will need to trade for them again...

Excellent idea, I sold out of consumables about half way through GenCon 07.

More things like scroll of mage armor. Use once but helpful for multiple rooms.

And perhaps more gold. Since we are trying to fight deflation, lets increase the money supply.

if tokens were made out of nilla wafers, quite a few would permanently be out of circulation. thus increasing sales and trading.
