Since I don't have boots of free action, I'll wear the boots of the leopard. Even if I had the Boots of FA, I'd probably still wear the Boots of the L and carry some solvent with me.

GOOD point! There is definately nothing in game to mimic the Leopard boots...not sure the US would get you out of a HOLD spell...but web or goo should work.

I personally think that Boots of Free Action win hands down (or maybe feet down?) over Elvenkind or Leopard, for *every* class.

Universal Solvent may be able to substitute for Free Action in the case of Webs, but the immunity to Hold and Slow spells is key. Based on the Wand of Slow, it looks like Slow would make you lose a turn. Without Boots of Elvenkind,
you may spend a turn to make a sneak attack (but you have the option of just attacking anyway). Against a Slow-like effect, you could completely lose your turn. A Hold spell would likely be even worse news, since it could take you out of the entire combat!

Maybe in a puzzle-intensive environment, Boots of the Leopard could have uses. But there *is* an effective substitute for Boots of the Leopard - it's called healing tokens! And healing tokens are a lot more plentiful than Universal Solvent (which was one of the most sought after Uncommons last year).

Furthermore, there have consistently been hindrance-oriented effects for the past several years. 2007 had the slimey ground in the Shambler room while in 2006 people were rooted to the ground during the Ghoul encounter (if you couldn't solve that visual puzzle with the scepter).

So regardless of what class I am playing, I'd always go for the Boots of Free Action!

But don't forget - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure (which can be quite literal when you are talking about tokens).

Boots of Free Action!! Helps against several things rather than one.
well, i agree that rogue default is elvenkind. as for others, i usually play ranger and try to be up front (that is part of ranger's job, isnt it?), so i was thinking i want the leopard boots for a little extra safety from traps. then i figure the wizard and bard can wear leopard boots too, just in case, and because if they get stuck in place, oh well, start singing and casting. the main fighters i was thinking want the protection of free action to make sure they can get in there and do some damage.

Generally, I would always go with Boots of Free Action (except for the Rogue), but since I don't have enough of those for the entire party I would use this logic to decide who gets what.

good luck using universal solvent when you are suffering from a hold spell. boots of free action are the best. If you see a trap, don't go near it. thats my motto.
