TOPIC: Will this years ingredient tokens be useful next year?

Will this years ingredient tokens be useful next year? 16 years 2 months ago #1

Or will we need to scramble and use them all this year?

It wouldn't make much sense for this year's to carry over if we're doing story arcs. I assumed the 4C's were the culmination of that. Of course, the question then becomes what do you use this year's whozits for since there's no way people will have the oppertunity to trade all of them in. After all, some people will have runs after ingredient tradeins are over.

It would be sorta spiffy to set up a pattern of sorts. Maybe this year's ingredient tokens will help 'introduce' the start of the next campaign. Maybe some sort of turnin program to either take place in the off-season or, unlike the token exchange now, one that you turn in at the _start_ of a run next year. It might be a special rumor token or something else that ties into that campaign arc as an intro.

The problem with just doing an endless rolling system for ingredients is that you're going to have thematic issues with both the ingredients and combos. If the ingredients of this year link to the events of this year, it seems sort of odd to have them be a part of combos next year when next year is a completely seperate arc.

I would like to be able to trade tokens in the downtime between years, and then use them next year. It would add something for us to do in the downtime.

I must admit that I got a little bit confused by the first few messages on this thread. I originally thought that the question you were asking was something like, "Will the 2007 ingredients still be useful after this year or is this it? Will we still want some 2007 ingredients for 2009 so that we can combine them to make a new 4c combo?

I think that is a good question too, if someone would like to address it. How did all you guys know to keep 2006 ingredients past last year?

But on to your question.

I am not entirely convinced that ingredients are story arc specific. Obviously they are dungeon and room specific (because their title directly reflects a monster in that dungeon) but I don't see any reason why an ingredient for something needs to be tied to the story.

I always figured that the combo tokens were what we got for giving all of the ingredients necessary to a crafter and having him give you the end result. It is your basic find, gather and retrieve quest.

So, uh, what I am trying to say is: Yes, yes I think that you will be able to use the 2008 ingredients in 2009.

At the start of this three year cycle, two years ago, TD was saying that they would be making a level 4 combo token in year three (2008) that used all six ingredient tokens from 2006 and 2007 (three ingredient tokens from each year). So, if you have a complete set of the 2006 ingredient tokens and a complete set of the 2007 ingredient tokens, you can use them in trading for the level 4 combo token this year. I suspect that is the only combo token this year that will use 2006 ingredient tokens.

I also suspect that future year combo tokens won't use ingredient tokens from further back than the previous year, unless announced ahead of time like this Level 4 Combo token, for the same reason that the combo tokens typically don't require tokens that weren't in that year's print run - it makes it too hard for newer players to have the tokens to trade in. Plus, True Dungeon wants to encourage the purchase of the current year's tokens, and one way to do that is to make the current year's tokens be ingredients for the combo tokens.

I am rather new to True Dungeons. It is my intent to figure out if the special ingredient tokens that can only be found as treasure in 2008 will have a use after 2008. This is rather important if there are games being ran after the turn in time deadline (per henwy).

In order to do this while having True Dungeons 2009 tokens marketable all that would have to be done is to say X treasure only 2008 token = Y treasure only 2009 token (make a chart). Explain it away as the merchant guild trading in bits (don't even bother trading actual tokens, just collect the equal one).

I think it's almost certain that any dungeon-only ingredient tokens you find in this year's dungeon will be useful in next year's combo tokens. They may not be useful after next year, they will probably not be useful this year (they have never been useful the year they are found), but they will certainly be useful next year.
