TOPIC: Token Challenge...

A fun little exercise for anyone up for a little challenge...<br /><br />(Rules are simple - build this character using any tokens - 2008 included...)<br /><br />WHO AM I - and what am I wearing or relying on to be the following...<br /><br />I am the best ranged player in the game with a total of +14 points...I am +9 to hit and +5 damage in ranged attacks.<br /><br />WHO AM I and how did I get this bonus?<br /><br />First one to post here with the all the right answers...wins an autographed Sanctuary scroll. <br /><br />Have fun!<br />G

i believe this is the answer, so if you are still trying to figure it out on your own, dont read this.<br /><br />and before i give the answer you are looking for, were you saying that is the best bonus to hit and then just found the best damage bonus to go with it?  because there are others that have higher total bonuses...<br /><br />anyway, you were (probably) looking at a rogue: base range to hit: +3<br />base range to dmg: +0<br /><br />gloves of dex: +1 to hit<br />flaming short bow: +2 to hit<br />potion of cats grace: +2 to hit<br />blessed: +1 to hit<br /><br />bracers of archery: +2 to dmg<br />masterwork arrow: +1 to dmg<br />bard singing: +2 dmg<br /><br />to hit: +9<br />to dmg: +5<br /><br />but since i play ranger, i quickly noticed that with the new +1 mighty long bow i can get a damage bonus well above +5:<br />ranger:<br />base range to hit: +2<br />base range to dmg: +0<br /><br />gloves of dex: +1 to hit<br />potion of cats grace: +2 to hit<br />blessed: +1 to hit<br /><br />bracers of archery: +2 to dmg<br />masterwork arrow: +1 to dmg<br />bard singing: +2 dmg<br /><br />+1 mighty long bow: +1 to hit<br />base str bonus: +1 to dmg<br />girdle of hill giant strength: +1 to dmg<br />potion of bulls strength: +2 dmg<br /><br />to hit: +7<br />to dmg: +9<br /><br />so the ranger gets -2 to hit vs rogue (dex stat and only +1 bow) but gains +4 dmg (from str bonuses)...i also noticed the barbar can take another -1 to hit and get another +2 to damage.  so, it just depends on how you define 'best ranged player' <br />i would go with ranger, the rogue doesnt do enough damage and the barbar is giving up too much hit bonus, and because it says it right there in the name, RANGER <br /><br />-kent

Kent wins!<br /><br />I did leave out one important point...the bonuses I stated were attacking in the first true combat round...not in a Pre Initiative Round.<br /><br />So yes, while the Ranger CAN get -2 to hit and +4 damage (+2 overall points more than the Rogue) - you do lose a round drinking the Cats potion AND you lose a round drinking the Bulls potion.  (The Rogue of course would be wearing the Belt of Retrieval not the Girdle...and only quaff the Cats potion.)  So the Rogue attacks three times to your one.<br /><br />Would you really sit out two rounds with the ranger to pump up with those two potions?  I wouldn't.<br /><br />If you were required to attack in the first true combat round - you would only be +5 +7 or +12 total...two below the Rogue - who is in my opinion the BEST ranged CHAR in the game.<br /><br />oh the Barbarian and Ranger tie for second best as you can swap up to 3 points of +To Hit for +damage instead...but you would be losing a round of combat if you decided to pump up with the Girdle and a potion...

pump up the ranger strength and use 2 daggers of returning then you can do more damage:<br /><br />base to hit:+2<br />base to damage:+1<br /><br />belt of retrieval:<br /><br />gloves of dexterity: +1 to hit<br />potion of cat's grace: +2 to hit<br />bless: +1 to hit<br />bard singing: +1 to hit<br /><br />bracers of archery: +2 to damage<br />potion of bull's strength: +2 damage<br />bard master work instrument: +2 to damage<br /><br /><br />+7 to hit<br />+7 to damage<br /><br />with EACH dagger of throwing  for a total of +28

Do the rules say a Ranger can throw two?  I guess the real question is - Should the rules say the ranger can throw two?

Hmm... just because you can fight melee combat with 2 hands doesn't mean you can throw accurately with 2 hands.<br />(example - I can shoot pool and write with both hands - put if I try to pitch left-handed, it's a base on balls every time.)

does not say you can't. And the daggers of throwing say they can used for both....

Well I asked Dave and he said he would allow it.

hmmm - well I disagree that a ranger could throw two daggers in a round...just because they are two handed does not, like Jammies said - mean they can do so with accuracy.  Ranged is a dominate hand thing.  AND does this mean they could throw two spears a round???  I don't think we want that - 4-18 base +6 damage each...for a total of 16-24 (and +4 to hit with each.)<br /><br />TWOLF - I see some problems with your numbers...<br /><br />First there is no +1 damage bonus for strength using the daggers.<br />Second, I don't think you want to sit out a round drinking the second potion...<br /><br />Thanks for the reminder - I forgot the +1 to hit from the Bard song...<br /><br />Hope those of you who crunched numbers had fun!
