The board is too quiet. I bet everyone is off slaving away, trying to pull together the cash for last-minute token purchases, before the 2007 tokens disappear, right?

To kill time, I was bouncing around ideas of what would make good Combo Tokens for 2008. I'm certain Dave and Jeff already have some idea of what they want to do, but since there have been no official posts about it, I'm going to hypothesize...

4C (no substitutions): Some cool item. Permanent. Not a weapon (we have many cool weapons already, and besides, any weapons might be usable only by certain classes, which would make players of the other classes annoyed). Not a ring either, I think, as there are tons of cool rings already. Maybe a cool amulet? (although all the folks who own HoP would think twice about using anything other than their magic treasure generator). Maybe something neat like a Crown or Diadem of power (which would take up a helm slot). Or maybe something which would, like the SpiderSilkShirt, not take up any slot currently used. A Medallion? A brooch? A special pouch?
Maybe it will do something cool like grant the wearer 2(?) extra HP (not overly powerfull... but if it doesn't take up a currently use slot, people will want it!)
Maybe it will give protection from a specific type of damage (like frost, or acid).
Maybe it grants a power like (limited) levitation?

4C (with substitutions): again, a permanent item. Not a weapon. Perhaps a cool cloak or robe, or a belt or shoes. Something with protective abilities (like the SpiderSilkShirt) or that adds to save (but stacks with rings and Cloak of Resistance)

3C (with substitutions available) - either a permanent item, or - especially if the 4C's are permanent - a very cool consumable, with X charges. Similar to the Gem of Blinding, but with a cooler effect. Maybe an incredibly rare Ioun stone (I don't think you could 'make' an ioun stone, but the mysterious trader might trade for it anyway)

2C (with subs avail) - a cool weapon (Dagger with Ghost Touch ability?) or maybe a neat shield (+1AC) that has some special property.

1C (with subs avail) - a consumable potion, or phial of something? A small weapon kinda like the silver dagger?

Okay. Ran out of ideas.
Any thoughts?

--- EDITS for typos ---

Do you think there will be combo items this year? In 2006 there appears to have been 6 of them. This past year there was 3, and in this coming year, I keep hearing this rumor about needing all the ingredients in combination with each other for powerful item. Perhaps that 9 ingredient items will be the only combo item this year?

As an aside, what are "mystery 4 cauldron tokens?"

As far as what items I think would be appropriate for combo items, here's a few ideas:

4c or 3c: Flask of Conversion: changes any potion poured into it into another potion of equal or lesser rarity

2c:if you want a weapon for 2c, I think the sling needs a magical counterpart. Of course they are rather simple implements so making them a combo item might be a bit odd. Still, a sling of stunning, which once per room, allows the user to toss a stone at an opponent and force them to make a save or be stunned for 1 round

1c: poison potion of some type with x # of uses

I had been thinking about an everfilling potion bottle. no idea what crating level it could be on, but the concept is that when you get the item, they superglue a potion of your choice, face out obviously, to the other side of it, and if you use the potion in an adventure, you dont turn the toekn over to the DM, you keep it and can use it again on the next adventure. but once you use it, place it in yur badge or hand it over tot he DM but they hand it back at the end of the adventure.
having it stay filled forever, like using it once per room would be a bit too powerful i think. so i figure it would take the time of the course of an adventure for it to refill.

on another thought, it was talked about in another thread, about a possible forge being set up to turn in an amount of weapons to get parts out of them to craft other weapons.

Well, we don't know for sure. It's always been based on Jeff's willingness to make/order the tokens for the combos, and Dave's willingness to staff the post of 'Mysterious Trader'. Maybe you're right - there could be only a single Combo token this year. I'm hoping there will be at least 4, though.

As an aside, what are "mystery 4 cauldron tokens?"

The 4-cauldron (or 4C) token was suggested a couple years back, as a combo token which would require dungeon-only ingredients from all 3 years of the story arc in order to build it. Or maybe, just tokens from the first 2 years of the 3-year arc, because it would be tough to use 2008 ingredients when most people won't have had a chance to collect them, yet.
Basically, since there has never been a 4C combo token before, it's a mystery to us (and maybe even to the Mysterious Trader himself) what sort of stuff will go into building this item.

As far as what items I think would be appropriate for combo items, here's a few ideas:

4c or 3c: Flask of Conversion: changes any potion poured into it into another potion of equal or lesser rarity

2c:if you want a weapon for 2c, I think the sling needs a magical counterpart. Still, a sling of stunning, which once per room, allows the user to toss a stone at an opponent and force them to make a save or be stunned for 1 round

I think it would be cool to have a 'magic' sling, though it might be more than a 2C item.

Cool ideas, Turnip Power.

Perhaps the ability to make Silversheen for weapons, or an elemental imbument for weapons that are turned in at the start of the adventure and last the whole way, kind of like how mage armor works.

As a joke i was thinking about making a bathroom token that lets you leave the dungeon to do yur business :).

Thanks Raven!

There ya go...good idea. If they're concerned about too much in and out disruption, they can control it with these wonderful "you can poo" tokens.

Should we distinguish between #1 and #2 tokens? Maybe make them uncommon and rare respectively?

d20 post again... in d20 a shirt or vest takes up a slot. So this slot is actually used in TD. There is only one slot that hasn't been used by TD - the eye slot. That takes eye lenses or goggles.

I like the +2 HP item. If you make it an ioun stone that would work too, as we can have 5 of them. There isn't even five in the game yet.

Yeah, but I'd prefer such an item to raise the Constitution by one. :)

Okay, perhaps too powerful. Perhaps more like 5 HP instead of 2.

I can see lots of cool ideas coming.

Is there a 4C combo item we can relate back to the ingredients? Of course, not knowing if we're having 2008 ingredients or what they are if we do hinders this thought process.... but what about something akin to the Spider Silk Shirt? The 4C could have some powers that relate to all the ingredients used to create it.

JKW

Well, let's see....

The six we know about are Ectoplasm, Shambler Slime, Quicksilver, Stone Spider Fang, Dryder Silk, and Ghoul Tongue. The other three are unknown...

I know, how about nyghtmare's haunted cowbell :)

j/k

how about for 4c (no subs) a pair of pants that allows a player to move quickly (like haste)

The "recipe" to craft this item would be dipping the dryder silk in a brew of the mixed ectoplasm, slime and quicksilver. The silk is placed on a loom. The stone spider fang is crafted into a needle to place the buttons on the pants made from the ghoul tongue.

How about "The girdle of Garagos" as a 4c.

This is an item bearing the name of the psychotic deity of battle, destruction, and plunder of the same name.

The token only functions when the wearer is not using any armor, shield nor gear with the explicit purpose of providing AC (ring of protection for instance) but ability enhancing items and potions, such as the gloves of dexterity or potion of cats grace are acceptable. The token is also non-functional while the wearer wields a missile weapon or casts a spell.

The benefits of the girdle:

- +4 strength
- +1 attack per round
- +5 hitpoints

This may be a bit complex for TD but I thought I'd throw it out there.
