TOPIC: Gold/ Gem Tokens

Gold/ Gem Tokens 16 years 7 months ago #1

While other items on ebay can go for somewhat more than their worth, it seems that gold and gems take the cake in this regard. I've on 3 occasions taken interest in a gold lot that developed a price far more significantly out of touch with reality than anything else.

After looking at the different items and their cooresponding gold and cash values, it seems clear that the cash value of gold is approximately determined by multiplying the amount of the gold by 3 and dividing by 100. Therefore, the value of 100 gold, for instance, is about $3, maybe a bit more.

Now, one of the latest auctions has 1520 gold for sale with bidding that has reached $61 + $10 shipping...$71.

Based on my aforementioned math, the value of that gold is in fact $45.60...or even taking it up to $50 wold be reasonable ($40 + $10 shipping)...but $71?

Out of control...

Here I;ve been trying to save up gold to fight in an auction next year against folks with 10,000 + gold to get my hands on URs.

Had I a brain between my ears I'd just sell the gold I have now. I could easily just buy the next UR that shows its face on ebay with the proceeds!

...but I can't. No brain between the ears. =|

Anyway, once a few trades I have going come together, I'll have close to 3000 gold. By ebay standards, a purchaser would probably have to take out a home equity line to finance the purchase!

Alas.
(About the not selling, I mean. As for the lack of brain, many people seem to get along fine without 'em. ;) )

I don't know why some people pay the amounts they do. Me, I'm willing to pay approximately 10cents per GP, but that's about my max, and I factor shipping into that. (ie, if someone is willing to bring the GP to the Con and it costs me nothing in shipping, then 10cents/GP is reasonable.) On eBay, I top out around 7cents/GP.
I've won a few GP auctions, and lost many.

Well, let me ask, do you feel that the value of gold increases respective to the the value of items, or stays consistent with the dollar value.

Ok, let me use an example since my previous question didn't even make sense to myself.

Let's take the rare token full plate. The dollar value according to the (admittedly outdated) chart is $11.63 or 400 gold. Consistent with the math I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, 400 gold works out to be $12.00...pretty close to $11.63.

Now, we all know that the chart is dated and full plate is probably worth more or less now, but from what I'm seeing, it seems that the value of 400 gold (of gold in general) adjusts in value just as other tokens like full plate does. That doesn't seem to make sense though, unless folks valued gold as an end unto itself, rather than as a means of aquiring something, since the value of gold is now outstripping the dollar value to purchase items with the gold.

As an example, Raven you mentioned you would pay 10 cents per gold piece. Now, based on that, my 3000 gold would be worth $300 to you. One could probably purchase 1-3 URs with that money (depending on the UR) but were someone to trade those gold pieces for other items, or take them to an auction for a UR, you would be unlikely to be able to do much with that 3000 gold.

I am confused. What URs are you expecting to be sold at auction?

In 2006 there were artisen tokens sold at auction but those tokens were not useful in the game.

In 2007 the auction was of non-game items.

Aside from the fact that I don't have $300 to purchase 3000gp right now, that sounds about right.

Yes, I could purchase a minimum of 1 more UR with that (using the Pick-a-Purp promo) and maybe even get 2 on eBay, but here's the thing: I've got all the URs that I want. (At least until the 2008 tokens come out. ;) )

Gold however... it's hard to get any gold by selling commons or uncommons. It's possible at the Con, when there's new players looking to outfit their party, but on the forums, most people already have what they need. I could get more gold by buying more token packs, but for $250 (30 packs), I'd gain maybe 750gp.

I'm not planning on winning any auctions any time soon, but someday in the future I might want to. Or maybe I'll want to do something else with the gold, like make a treasure hunt, or employ bodyguards, or buy off the guards so the Rogues' Guild can operate in peace.

Who knows?

Well, the power monger I am, I think my primary interest in gold is to use it to acquire URs ( at least until I'm outfitted with the gear I'm looking for, then I can turn to more roleplaying pursuits =D ), so since URs are not what are generally won at TD auctions, anyone more interested in gold than URs please look me up =D

I'm looking for a few URs, but #1 on my hitlist (assuming the mace of disruption isn't given a buff) is Gearons heavy mace +2. Any citizens with information leading to this acquisition of this weapon should contact the Turnip as soon as possible.
