I agree with Raven's points.

Yes, I think Raven hit the nail on the head. More versions of the same stuff so players have to choose and we don't have to worry about ridiculously overpowered players. And keep the items fairly simple/self-explanatory, or those are gonna have to be some pretty seasoned DMs to remember them all, especially after TD continues for years.

I still love the idea of "Dungeon only" tokens. And like Raven said, they don't really have to be useful items. Any unique items are going to throw the collectors into fits of drooling.

Lastly, I'd like to see TD items/souveniers available for purchase with gold pieces/gems as well as real money. Even if the prices were set really high (say, 5000 gold), it would give some of us something to strive for.

It sounds like there is interest in a “Once per Dungeon mechanic for particular items. Can anyone think of a verifiable and practical way to achieve this while limiting production costs, and DM and player difficulty?

The only thought I'd had on the "once per Dungeon" mechanic was that it might be better to give up tracking things per dungeon and go with "once per module".

Let's face it - most people will only have the time/resources to go through TD once. So to them, once per dungeon is the same as once per year. Put a unique mark on the token when it's used (like a simple '05) and all the DM's know it's been used that adventure. Add "A" or "B" if you want to track it for the A and B modules, or just say you can only use it once per year, period.

Us harcore nuts who want to go through multiple times (both modules A and B on normal and hardcore modes) will be hurt by this slightly, but (I hate to say it) we're in the minority, and we can suck it up.

Or we could pick up an extra pair of thieves' tools to use for the additional adventures.

This was discussed for a while in another thread without a really good solution. The issue came down to those players who may run the event(s) multiple times. How do you design the mark that is small yet still to has enough significance to differentiate between runs on the same day.

Various intials and date combo's were tried, but found lacking. It seemed the closest possible solution was to trade the player a "receipt" for the item when used and let the player then turn in said receipt after the adventure for a replacement. However, that adds more logistics to TD staff.

A player's (and teams) honesty and integrity may be the best solution for those "once per adventure" items.

Added: Or as Raven stated, design a system for the average bulk of the players and to heck with the addicts!

I like the concept of relying on player honesty. After all this is not a contest. It does not matter to any other group how well your group did. Trust the players. There may be one or two groups who cheat, so what, the only people they are cheating are themselves.

The number of times a player is going to cheat TIMES the number of times it will occur IS LESS THAN the cost of trying to prevent it.

Excellent point, George!

As much as my innate sense of fair play would be offended by people cheating (and getting away with it!) it's really not gonna affect me one way or the other. The game isn't "us vs. them", and if one player cheats, it won't make me any less likely to "win". It just sucks for them.

TD is about seeing the awesome sets and props, experiencing the thrill of wondering whats around the next corner, and feeling your pulse race as you aim for that critical shot. Anything you do to "cheat" makes it that much less sweet to make it to the final room.

Thanks for putting it into perspective.

Continuing on with the Expansion Pack idea...just for consideration if not my own enjoyment...what if an EP has half the numbers of the base set, 18 common, 18 rare and 18 very rare???

The commons could be something like: (took suggestions from other's posts)

GEAR
Candle / Oil - in steel flask / 50' silk rope / Glass Flask / Wooden Map case / Iron Spike (loved this suggestion) / Wine in Skin

ITEMS
Burn Salve / Holy Symbol

POTIONS
Invisibility / Detect Magic / Cure Minor Wounds / Speed (loved this suggestion)

SCROLLS
Magic Weapon (all) / Darkness (Cleric, Bard) / Animate Rope (Mage, Bard) / Mirror Image (Mage, Bard) / Glitterdust (Mage, Bard)

NOTES
No gold/gems in an EP (at least not in the commons) - sort of like mana cards are to Magic - why have gold in every set? Essentially the items can be sold for gold so minimize gold even more by not having it in EPs.

Just continuing on with the wild thoughts...

The idea is growing on me! Honestly I wasn't sure to begin with... however it is starting grow on me, especially some of the gear.

It would be intersesting to see the clever module designers then give some flexible opportunities to use these items and gear. HOWEVER, AGAIN, NOT MAKE THEM MANDITORY.

For example, you encounter some ancient iron gate. The winch and chain is rusted almost beyond operation. For the team with the little flask of TD40 oil they could loosen the chain and go. Another party could find alternate ways to open the gate.

Basically, gear and non-combat items can add to creative solutions!

OK did the Rares and Very Rares in a bit of a hurry (again taking ideas from several sources as well as adding to the list). Just for conversation:

Rares:
WEAPONS
Blowpipe / Morningstar / Club / Flail / Dart / Spiked Gauntlets / Spear / War Hammer

ARMOR
Shield Buckler +1

POTIONS
Strength / See Invisible / Dispel Magic / Cure Lt. Wounds (5)

SCROLLS
Slow / Cure Lt. Wounds (5) / Knock / Bless / Detect Secret Doors

AND now for the Very Rares

WEAPONS
+1 Mace (was there any doubt...? ;) ) / +1 Long Bow / +1 Short Bow / Composite Long Bow / Composite Short Bow

ARMOR
Tower Shield +3

STUFF
Periapt of Health / Ring of Wizardry / Pearl of Wisdom / Gauntlets of Dexterity / Boots of the North / Chime of Opening / Wand of Fireballs / Scroll - Wall of Force / Wand of summon Monsters (too cool the DM gets to throw) / Girdle of Giant Strength / Cloak of Displacement +1 / Ring of Protection +1

whew - ok that was fun...now is there any shot that Expansion Packs are a possibility Jeff???

Thanks,
