You turn it in at the beginning of your adventure and it has some sort of effect.  For example, this year the special UR gave people a chance to slide for other UR's, such as the +2 Bracers of defense.<br />

Can the special tokens from one year be used in another?

Specials can be used in any year.  However, the non-ultra rare versions, such as this, wouldn't have had the same effect as the Ultra-Rare did this year.  I'm not sure if anyone tried a non-Ultra-Rare to see what would happen, I'd be interested in knowing what did happen if they did.  <br /><br />And, the Ultra-Rare special might not have the same effect next year that it did this year. 

Each year Specials have different effects.<br /><br />In 2004 it was a cursed item.<br />In 2005 you could use it in the shops and trade it for any token of the same color.<br />I.E Common Special could be traded for any common token, Rare Special for Any rare token, etc.<br />Don't know what they did in 2006.<br />This year you got to slide, and depending on what you slide you got a certain token of equal rarity. <br />So purple special was for a purple token, and anything below would have been for an equal rarity. Red for a red some sort, green for green of some sort, brown for a brown of some sort. I believe Only Purples had a special printed token done for it(+2 Bracers).<br /><br />Being a brown, it would have the least effect. Its value is not really in game, but more for collectability. If you're not really a collector but more of a player, the ? Special may not be want you want to target.

I heard a rumor that some woodie specials were actually going to be considered as a rumor token...but not sure about that.

I checked the listing, and the seller's name looks awfully familiar. He was a TD volunteer in 2005, wasn't he? (Tho he seems to have tokens from 2004 as well as 2005).<br /><br />Don't know if anyone can answer that for me. Just a curiousity.

Some of these got dumped into circulation back in 2005 when we ran out of tokens to sell.   I got a red ? ? ? , I think I traded it to Raven for an elixer of life.  <br /><br />
