TOPIC: ??Possible Counterfit Tokens??

Re: ??Possible Counterfit Tokens?? 16 years 7 months ago #13

If you get a private message or email offering to sell you something as a second chance offer, it may well be an attempt at fraud, I've gotten messages like that myself.

On the other hand, I've bought and sold numerous items from Ebay as formal second chance offers. If you log onto your Ebay account, you should be able to verify if you have a legitimate second chance offer. There are many items that people have multiples of and offer second chance offers for if your bid is high enough.
My advice, never accept 2nd chance offers. There's usually something slimy involved and your odds of actually receiving the item (even if not counterfeit), IMO, probably hangs around under 50%.

?!?! I send out 2nd chance offers quite often when I sell on eBay. There are many times when I get multiples of a certain item and if I see someone who has been bidding on a similar item and never winning, I'll send them the offer. Saves time for me (don't have to wait 5 days for another auction to end) and gives them a chance to get the item without having to try 15 more times.

Oh, but I ALWAYS send the 2nd chance thru email, never thru a PM - I want us both to be covered in case something goes wrong.

I'm curious (because I don't do a lot of eBay stuff and don't know all the terms/protocols), but when you say you always do 2nd chance thru email, do you mean you email the person privately? Or do you mean some eBay email, which keeps records or 2nd chance offers? I can't see how just an ordinary email would be able to cover you in case something goes wrong.

I was curious about that also. Doing 2nd Chance Offers through Ebay is a formal process, and Ebay sends the 2nd Chance Offer for you, although you can add wording to it. You can track your 2nd Chance Offers on you My Ebay page.

OOPS! I didn't re-read my post before I submitted it. That should be "thru eBay, never email or PM".
Thanks for catching that. It's always an official eBay 2nd chance offer. Never a personal email. D'oh!

Thanks for the clarification, Jammies!

In my (very limited) experience, I've never had any trouble with 2nd Chance offers from eBay - but they've always come from a trustworthy source (Hi, Mike!) and through the proper channels.

I'd be very leary of someone contacting me for a 2nd Chance offer via email, because there's no way of telling if it's really the same person. More likely someone trolling eBay, looking for suckers to contact and seperate from their cash. In those cases, I'd be inclined to believe Turnip's assertion that less than 50% are legit. Possibly way less.

EDIT for typo

If it comes through non-ebay channels, it isn't legit, period, 0%, nada, never. If a second chance offer is made, it will always come through official ebay channels, as ebay itself will generate the message. Having worked as a contract ebay seller, as well as just from being around it myself for many years and many transactions, I've seen more forms of attempted fraud than I thought were possible. One thing they all had in common, however, was that they took place outside ebay channels. The messages didn't show up in my ebay account inbox, so they were obvious fake (no matter how "real" the email looks).

The fake second chance offer is a relatively common one, and is usually accompaned by requests for payment through untrackable methods (cash, money order, revealing bank info) based on such lame excuses as "my paypal account is full," or "I just moved out of the country."

True - the latest version of that (I'm assuming) is the series of emails I've gotten saying I've been selected as an Ebay powerseller, and it gives links to click on in the email. However, there is no mention of it on my "My Ebay" page. I've been a powerseller in the past, and while I got an email from Ebay, I also had a message on my Ebay "My Messages" page, and in the recent cases there are no messages of the sort on My Ebay.

This does sound like a rip off, especially since we know FORSAKEN was the real seller and he has said that message isn't from him. So I guess the good news is these are not counterfit tokens. The bad new is there are JERKS trying to take advantage of people on E-bay.

Hell, ebay scamming is almost a respectable career option nowadays. It's like those Nigerian email scams. Unless you're suffering from diminished mental capacity or quite elderly, there's no excuse for falling for a scam like that.

=| You mean the $42,000 I gave to that nice man wasn't just a deposit he needed to get $623,000,000 for me from his government stockpile? Oh, man!

Worst eBay Scam I was personally subjected to was: I sold some old antique pots for my folks on eBay...the buyer switched the pot with a cracked one and returned it asking for his money back...the pot was very similar to the one we sent him - but it was not the same pot. Anyway just as we were about to send back the money - someone else on eBay wrote us and said they got a cracked pot returned to them and saw this guy as a potential scammer....

Together we turned the person in to eBay and he was suspended and then banned about a week later.

I'm sure these people are able to get right back on and continue their scam - but at least people talking to each other helps cut down some of the success of these scams.
