TOPIC: Why did people do token trading?

Why did people do token trading? 16 years 8 months ago #1

I know why I was trading tokens, I wanted reserve tokens to play in the auction.

But since only Smak and I showed up with many reserve tokens at the auction, most of you must have been trading for other reasons.

So I am curious, why did people set up as token traders (if you didn't participate in the auction)?

I traded stuff for gold to get one of each reserve token...that was all I really wanted.

I passed on the auction because I think I was either working or on a TD run at the time. (and it would have cost me reserve tokens I scraped hard to make.)I'm happy with my Reserve tokens, and TOTALLY pleased with the first year Cleric beads - THANKS again George!

*oh - I mailed your ingredients the other day and put in a small 100GP gem for your patience. As for paying back the Cleric beads - I have something even better planned for ya! Thanks again! G*
Well, I don't collect tokens per se; I purchased a ton of tokens primarily to support TD. But, I find that I can get addicted to the act of wheeling and dealing. So I am not specifically trying to trade for anything but just like to make good deals.

I set-up and traded due to the amount of complaints I heard in the marshling area about nothing to do with their GP they just got! So I set-up to help take the strain off of the TD thing that no-one was selling gear ad stuff!

Todd,

You know that might explain why I did not hear more than one complaint about no stores...

If you floated to each table before I got to them - then you might have been first hit by the QUESTIONS about GP and stores and such.

G

hmm, methinks it has to do with a certain rumor about combo items in the future requiring a reserve token. that adamantine is quite a high denomination.

I traded for 2 (maybe 3) reasons.

1) To chat with people going into TD.
If I set up shop, people would come and ask me questions about what items did, or how much stuff was going for, or did I have any URs to trade, and that led to questions like, "Have you already been thru the dungeon?" or "Can you recommend a good strategy for us because we've never played before." I got to chat with a lot of new players, and make a few new friends.

2) To provide gear for people who didn't have it.
Basically, that's why I set up between 10am and 12. I figured that once the tavern opened, there'd be other traders lurking in there for people to trade with (I was a bit off base on that guess, since most traders set up in the hall, and the hours were pretty random). Until there were other traders available, tho, I tried to provide a place where new players could stock up on their basic gear.
And later in the evening, I was trading for ingredients to bring home to Lady Myke and another friend who couldn't make the Con.

2.5) I also traded to get rid of tokens. I didn't want to have to lug all that weight back to Canada with me. (This is only half a reason, because if I really didn't want to lug it, I never would have brought it to the Con in the first place.) Reason or not, it was an excellent incentive to give people good deals on tokens.
"Hey - you bought a scroll? Here's a free bone scroll case. Speaking of the auction, I think its pretty clear that a Live Auction didn't provide the access that we were expecting. I wanted to go but couldn't because I was on shift. Many of the largest token collectors are also volunteers and so by definition you are going to have a conflict.

Next year, I think silent open auctions are definitely the way to go.

To rip off newbies, of course. Duh.

I guess I can let you have that scroll of knock in exchange for the sapphire necklace but it's cutting me own throat.

I buy and trade tokens because I like the challenge of collecting things and trying to make a full set of items. Providing they don't get out of hand with 47 new releases every six months or so. Right now I have all of the gold toned '07 tokens (except for all the purps) and about 2/3 of the platinum ones. My goal is to have all of the platinums by next TD. As for the purps...well let's just say that I'm not holding my breath on that one.

I trade tokens to get one I want for myself. These days, that generally means a UR, though I'll trade for certain reds or other items if I have a need for them.

Though I didn't do much of it, I'll also trade (or just give stuff away) to equip folks who don't have a basic kit for their class. I don't have any use for a dozen +1 cloaks, I'd much rather give them to newbies who'll be excited and thankful than keep them in a box where they never see the light of day.

As for the auction, I didn't even know exactly when it was happening. All I knew was that I was busy elsewhere, either volunteering or dungeon-crawling, and couldn't be bothered. Some of that stuff would have been cool, but I didn't have the time or inclination to trade for the reserve tokens, and wouldn't have had sufficient cash to pay for the stuff I'd have liked anyway.
Token trading at gencon is like the wild west. There are no rules and every once and a while you hear about a trade that's like the equivalent of someone shooting a nun in the face with a shotgun. Sure you feel bad for the nun and heap scorn upon the bandito, but part of you wishes you could have bagged the penguin yourself.

The funny thing is, other than trading for ingredient tokens, I don't think I did any big swaps with anyone who didn't already have a huge supply of tokens and was a forumite to boot. About the only other people really looking to trade were those who had gotten gold and gems. Since I'm likely never to participate in an auction, I only end up needing enough to cover any combo tokens I'm making.
