It needs a critical mass of participation. The way I figure it, the more of a secondary market, the more the primary market suffers, at least with a small population. In a large economy, it actually spurs on the primary market. As it stands, all token resale is doing is surpressing token purchasing since it avoids the randomness aspect of things. Why pay to TD for a random podge when you can get exactly what you want direct, even if at a markup.

You're ignoring the point that there has been a secondary market in True Dungeon since the start of tokens, in the trading of tokens, primarily through the Forums. There is already a system set up where people can get the exact tokens that they need, by trading for them rather than by having to continually buy random bags of tokens to try to get what they want. I don't think that buying tokens on Ebay makes the primary market suffer any more than trading tokens does. In fact, it could easily be argued that having the opportunity to buy tokens on Ebay could spur token sales, because someone might buy some tokens on Ebay, get interested in collecting tokens, and then move to buying tokens directly from True Dungeon - especially to get the Ultra-Rares, which are rarely offered for sale.

I hate to agree with Henwy but I think he has a point. The secondary Trading market does not take money out of the system, eBay does. To trade, people need to buy tokens. With eBay, people can simply bypass True Dungeon and spend their money on tokens directly. The only relevant factor that I could see is that the people selling tokens on eBay now have more money to spend on tokens. Whether people who sell tokens on eBay intend to buy more tokens or not, I don't know.

While the secondary trading may not directly take money out of the system, it does remove the need for someone to spend more money on tokens because they got what they needed from trading. It certainly isn't a closed system, where there is a set amount of money to be spent on tokens, whether directly from True Dungeon or from Ebay. People have lots of places to spend money, and if they can get their tokens from trading, they do not have as much incentive to buy more tokens and will likely spend their money elsewhere.

The big factor in this is that Ultra-Rares are often not available for trade, and people often have to buy tokens directly from True Dungeon to get them. The same is true from Ebay sales, there have been very few 2007 Ultra-Rares for sale on Ebay, so people still need to buy directly from True Dungeon to get Ultra-Rares.

I'd say the "Pick a PURP" promotion (while making the best URs more common) was a good promotion for TD.

Too bad we have two huge factors in play - new chippie format and the "Pick a PURP" promo.

Still I would venture, the only two reasons my purchase was what it was - was because I wanted to support TD and the UR Promo was just too tempting.

Bro, I feel exactly the same way. The main reason I buy tokens is to support True Dungeon - but the main reason I bought as many as I bought this year is because of the Ultra-Rare with each $250 purchase. And that's why I think there will still be a large amount of sales of tokens to True Dungeon regardless of token trading or token buying on Ebay, because people want to support True Dungeon, and because they want to play with the Ultra-Rare tokens.

For the continued health of True Dungeon token sales, I hope that every year they swap out a large percentage of the tokens, particularly at the Ultra-Rare and Rare categories.

I too like a good portion of the tokens swapped out every year...and for the most part I am not too worried about Power Creep.

I do think TD would do well with adding slots as well as items to slots as this is the real strategy behind using Tokens...the more choices players have, the more fun. Compounding on that is the coolness of collectibility.

Can we have more Helms, Iouns, Boots, Cloaks, Girdles, Gloves, armbands, and of course more weapons for the Cleric class...Hammers and Morningstars come to mind...

Well, too bad! It's all mine. Because it's one of the tokens that only volunteers got, I don't think I can sell it. Also, it reminds me of my time volunteering last year. So, I'd like to keep that one. In fact, this is a brilliant move on Jeff's part - give out tokens you can only get by volunteering and the token-a-holics will volunteer in droves. :icon_jokercolor:

Hate to burst your bubble hun, but volunteers were not the only ones that got it. People who did dungeon runs on wednesday were also supposed to receive them, though not all did.

Yeah I have to state that I have two Savior Stones due to the fact that I did the Golden Ticket Run on Wednesday and then helped out with takedown. So yeah volunteering is awesome that way and I would have loved to have been able to do it again this year, alas pregnancy not allowing it. Still those Savior Stones are cool and I am not sure I would want to trade either of them because of how I got them.

I will also state that I am not fond of Ebay either and will not be purchasing anything from it. So I would have to agree with Henwy on that account. I understand why some people do it and that is their choice. It is just not mine. If I was going this year I would definitely try to participate in the TD Auction though. That I think would be loads of fun. Mainly because I would love to see what they have for sale.

Lady Myke

The existence of ebay only helps the circulation of products. It sets a standard for pricing that people can see and grab hold of so that they know they are getting something in return for their purchase. This ultimately makes purchases go up since if you think you are buying something thats worthless then you just dont do it.

I like eBay for what it is...an auction house that takes a cut on the transaction.

It is nice that the auctions are so public and I think seeing the cash prices being paid on tokens is important to make people feel like the product is mainstreamed!

G

Speaking for myself, I know that I bought more tokens this year than ever before, in part because I was able to sell some of the extras on eBay. In that way, it seems to me that the secondary market helps to drive the primary market.

Also, I know that at least one person who bought tokens in my auctions turned around and bought bags of tokens directly from True Dungeon. All of my auctions had links to the Token Guide, and to TrueDungeon.com, so in a way, I think the eBay sales helped to advertise the product to the general public. I'm pretty sure that the auctions have drawn some people in.

And finally, as has been pointed out, seeing the tokens selling really well on eBay helps to affirm that they do in fact have real value. I've heard players grumbling about "being required to buy tokens", but seeing that a bag of tokens is really worth something has got to be encouraging.
I also have bought far more tokens than I would have since I'm able to sell some of the duplicate tokens on Ebay. And I agree that it has to help token sales when people realize that there is an actual market for them.

Just wanted to let everyone know that with all the talk of Ebay i decided to post them there. This will give everyone a chance to bid for the tokens. I guess that i wasn't specific earlier in that i was wanting cash for the tokens. Here is a link to the Ebay offer.

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250148780450&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=015
