Binia -

Yes. Consumables are just that - consumed. When they are used, or in the case of an item with charges, once the last charge has been marked off, the DM keeps the token.

To give you (anyone reading) some very rough idea of how rare Rares are - I snagged two Potions of Death's Door out of my last 30 packs - but No Ring of Protection +1, Amulet of Thorns, or Longbow +1 that I was also hoping for.
I believe there are 40 Rares this year. So, you'd have to buy at least 40 $10 packs ($400) to even have a snowball's chance in hades of getting all 40 of the Rares. Specific Rares are, well, Rare. :)

I'm more likely to trade my tokens for other tokens I want than I am to sell them. I would probably put too high a price tag on something I'm selling. That is, the Potion of Death's door seems, to me, like it should be worth at least the cost of the event (what was it again this year? somewhere between $27.50 and $34.00?). However, it's an interesting world because 1) I probably would not pay that much for a single potion of death's door; and 2) I would probably trade it for much less in GP/dollar value that what I'd be willing to sell it for.

JKW

Thanks for the info - I'm just too cheap to think about dropping 34.50 on a potion of death's door, plus whatever it would take to get your character up to full. That also means I won't ask you to use one on myself or any of my party in the run we're doing together, ok? I'd say you did really well in this last lot! I saw your post that you got two UR's (is that in addition to the one you got to hand pick? or ..... I guess I don't know how they're working that deal now). You're better off with the potions - you'll find someone who'll trade you two of the rares you wanted for one of them, I bet,or at least close to.

binia

Binia -

I have no problem using a PoDD on worthy players, especially if they are grateful. No paybacks are necessary for working a dungeon together. Of course, if one resurrects several characters and keeps the party alive, it is nice to get first pick out of group loot or something, but it certainly isn't required.
Personally, I used three or four elixers of life (back when they were Rares) on strangers last year. One was thankful, the other two or three were not. Coincidently, the strangers who were not thankful also cheated inside the dungeon (they resurrected their characters by erasing the Ghost and Stoned on their cards) and they wiped away modifications to their HP values. I obviously won't be spending tokens on that group next year. The other groups I worked with, I'd drop tokens on, no problem.

It's an odd thing. Again, if I were to sell a PoDD, I'd want a steep price for it. If I were to buy one, I wouldn't shell out what I'd ask if I were selling one - it's just too much money for me to spend on a single token. However, I'd trade it for much less value and wouldn't hesitate to use it on fellow comrads inside the dungeon. Well, I suppose it depends upon if they are jerks or not cooperating with the group but are instead doing everything for themselves. Then I might not use one on that person. However, I'd certainly use one on a good group of players and would really only hope for a "thank you" in return. It's good to be appreciated - and to make friends.

John
JKW
I think this segways into a token idea. Ethereal Banishment - permanently destroy one ghost character. For all those really annoying and cheating players.

Hmmm... would DMs automatically be awarded a handful of these?

Interesting Token Idea.

Why not just use the Oil of Ghost Touch and smite the smuck with a Gearon's Heavy Mace +2?

I don't know that we could get away with doing that. This is a business and therefore the customer is almost always right, even when they're wrong.

Kim

Hm.

Another way of looking at this (my thoughts): for me, a token such as the PoDD has too much In Game Value for me to part with it for cash unless I'm getting an inflated cash value for it.

However, if I'm with a party and we're working well together but had some bad luck, I wouldn't mind using the PoDD on a party member, stranger or not. For the most part, if the Party survives, so do the individuals. Hence, it is in everyone's best interest to work together as a group and watch out for the group. As such, if someone uses a PoDD on someone else, that act probably also helps the person giving up the potion.

When I played my first year, I looked at the Elixer of Life as saving my cost of the event. I mean, I'd hate to walk in and die in Room one. That would suck. Money (and time) lost IMO. However, the Elixer could bring me back to life and full hit points, so I could continue to attempt the dungeon. From my point of view, if I had randomly received an EoL in my pouch, I wouldn't have parted with it at all - or not unless it were for as much or more than the event cost. However, after $500 of spending and trading off a Dragonscale Shield, I had five Elixers of Life - all of which I used, only one or two on myself.

Sorry - just trying to clarify the "value" issue for this particular token - for me, personally.

I'd wager that those strangers who have gone to the trouble to contact each other, started communications, worked on picking character classes, perhaps worked on strategy, etc., are going to be good players who would help out a party member in need. Those are okay people in my book. I'm the guy who pulls over at 2AM to help a stanger (yeah, my wife would prefer I don't do this) whose car has broken down. I think, however, after last year's experience, I'll save some of the PoDD type tokens (which cost a lot of money) for those teammates who really are working as a team and who don't cheat.

JKW

Yikes, I just had a thought that set my stomach to queasy. What if Magic did the same thing? When you giant-growthed, or lightning bolted, the card was ripped up? Or used your Mana Drain? Or even popped your Lotus?? Ideas like that really change the way I think about these tokens - comsumables, by their very nature, are going to be that much rarer as time passes. Something to keep in mind as you trade/buy/sell stuff. Hmm... maybe you guys already thought of that... ah well, what can I say, just a N00B here.

binia

Well, I'm certainly glad the auctions did as well as they did, and I appreciate everyone bidding. Ebay is so unpredictable though, there's no guarantee that future auctions will do as well. And you have to take into account the time it takes to sort the tokens into lots, take and edit the photos, list the auctions, send out invoices, package and ship the tokens - plus of course the Ebay and Paypal fees.

I certainly see the appeal to bidding on a particular item / items on Ebay (and I've done it tons myself, with Magic as well as True Dungeon), if you see an item that you know you need, it is worth paying a premium to get that item instead of buying random items cheaper and hoping you get what you need.

Heh. That's probably why certain consumables are much more highly valued. :)

Let's see, out of 3000 tokens, I had about 13 or 14 PoDD.
That means I had to spend an average of $230 to find each PoDD. It's the only Rare token that'll bring your character back from the dead. Yeah; I'm gong to value that more than a Great Sword +1. Can I interest you in one of the 40+ Magic Missile scrolls I have? The 40 Burning Hands? 40 or 50 Shocking Grasp? I don't value those tokens as much as a PoDD.

Yeah; I turned in the five elixer's of life I burned last year. I used up a Wand of Lightningbolts, too, although I still have that used token (it wasn't taken by the DM, so now it's a souvenier for me).

Magic - what's that? Just kidding. I've never played. Perhaps, if we have time, you can teach me at the con. When I first heard of it, I stayed away from it because I thought it would be such a poor substitute for D&D. However, it is Different than D&D and it can be played with much fewer players.

JKW
