TOPIC: North of the border shipping

North of the border shipping 1 year 5 months ago #1

Are there any Canadian dungeoneers near Woodstock Ontario? I don't do a lot of transmutes over mail but it ought to be worthwhile to group ship and split the shipping cost here and there.

The shipping up here his a little on the atrocious side since flat rate boxes don't quite work over the border.

I'm in London Ontario, but I tend do most of my transmutes whenever I'm down at an in person con to just avoid it entirely (got a box ready to go for GHC now actually)

Agreed. It's pretty painful. I've done both shipping and in person. In person is the way to go for sure. Just requires patience. As of now, I have only attended gencon in the US.

I've been wondering the same thing in planning for my eventual (not immediate) move to Canada.

Is getting a PO box in Niagra Falls (US side) and having tokens shipped there an option? With a Nexus card I've found crossing the border to check our Canadian PO box (and restock our Shreddies supply) to be pretty quick, at least at the Detroit/Windsor crossing.

I've considered that but haven't pursued it. Woodstock is around 1.5 hours from niagra, 2.5 from Windsor. I have a hard time justifying 3 hour round trip let alone making the time to go pick up something across the border. I suppose it depends on how close you will be.

There are a few brown boxes in Detroit that will receive for you, but by the time you pay gas, brown box fees, and time it really isn't worth it.

The only big variable is if you get lucky and get your package pulled for duty (which can cost you an extra hundred over and above shipping easy if you declare anything resembling an accurate insurance value).

From my personal experience, the best approach really is to avoid the whole issue and have a trusted receiver bank your stuff until it can physically be handed to you at a con.
