TOPIC: Reprint Profiteering: Just Say No

Reprint Profiteering: Just Say No 1 month 1 week ago #1

Now that the 2021 print sheets are out, I've already seen a few people who appear to be trying to profiteer from the reprints by dumping tokens for which reprints have been announced.

Please don't do this. It basically exploits players who don't read the forums or pay attention to the reprint sheets. Anyone exploited in that way is going to end up with a bad taste in their mouth about the game and the community. It's toxic behavior that hurts us all. Jeff puts an incredible amount of trust in us by involving us in token discussions at all. Let's not abuse that.

So, this came up a couple years ago in the midst of token design.

Many who sell on eBay "auto-relist" which doesn't take into account what has or hasn’t been agreed to be reprinted.

I do agree that they should be made aware of it, and hopefully they will act properly.

Yeah, I've said "appear" since I don't know what knowledge folks do or do not have.

I'm not sure if a several month moratorium on listing any tokens for sale that are being reprinted is the way to go. Maybe True Dungeon could send a newsletter out to everyone on their mailing list (which should be almost everyone that has played) with the new token images once they are finalized (which I think they are now, since Jeff said he had to send them in last week). That might help grow some interest in the new set prior to the ordering window opening up, and it would inform everyone of which tokens (particularly URs) are being reprinted.

I definitely get anyone who is selling MEC, because it did undergo a decent amount of change. And selling it in the price range of PYPs ($95-135) seems about as non-toxic of a way to do it as possible. I haven’t seen any of the mentioned sale attempts, but those would just be my thoughts if I stumbled across that one in particular.

It can not possibly be that hard to hold off on selling a couple reprinted tokens.

Anyone who sells a:
Mithral Gauntlets
Nightshade's +2 Short Sword
MEC
Shield.of the Scholar

And to a lesser extent
Earcuff of Orbits
Dougal's Cloak of the Stars
Cloak of Destiny

For full, pre-2021 token development price right now should absolutely take a long hard look in the mirror and think about what they're doing. I hope you dont really think you need that extra $100-150 more than the person you're selling to.

We are literally talking about 7 tokens, and if anyone who is reselling isn't aware of what they're doing, its because they are choosing not to be. The same could be said of the buyer of course, but there are far, far more potential buyers than there are sellers.

Yes, yes, I know, Caveat Emptor.

I was taken advantage of quickly after a lucky pull back in about 2013 or so, before I was ever active on the forums or learned token values. I am thrilled it didn't really push me away from the game, but it certainly could have.

One of the greatest things about this community is the people. Don't be the assh*le who ruins it for someone.

I have more I would like to say, but you get the idea.

And yes, a several month moratorium on reprinted tokens seems exactly like the right thing to do.

I am not in the position to be able to sell the reprinted tokens, but to help me understand, why is it problematic to sell reprinted tokens at ~PYP price before token sales begin? I could definitely understand the frustration if it was 2x PYP prices or anything like that.

Absolutely agree that profiteering is a shitty thing to do.

Absolutely disagree that shutting down token sales is the correct response.

If it's OFFICIALLY on the reprint list and you want to sell it around $150 that's fair given the current environment. If you want to sell it for $300 that's profiteering

I don't sell tokens, but really it's not a seller's responsibility to check market trends, and if a token is reprinted or not and reduce their prices. It's always the buyers responsibility to do the research.

Yes. But that really works in a larger marketplace (e.g. MTG). The community is relatively small, so it can leave a bad taste in the mouth of new players. Sellers absolutely should be able to price their tokens for whatever they want, but I think it helps the community if they put a disclaimer (e.g. reprinting, Jeff's talking about a reprint, etc) so that everyone makes an informed decision.

if I have anything in my store, it not to do this. Hell it needs a huge update anyway. If someone tried to buy a token being reprinted, i would tell them to wait for the new one anyway

I definitely wasn't thinking of you.

For those who say its fine to do, consider how you would feel if you paid ~260 for an MEC, then found out it was being reprinted.

I am ok with 125 or so, as the older token would be more rare and have some value.

Ultimately its up to buyers, as I said above. That doesn't mean we can't advocate for protection of newer players.

If people want to sell older tokens for PYP prices, of course that's fine.
