TOPIC: Gnomish Fizzy Lifting Pack (?)

So, an interesting ruling occurred and I want to gain some clarity. During E3 at PAX South, a friend attempted to use the Gnomish Fizzy Lifting Pack to attack the flying creature. A ruling given was that the pack could only lift the character straight/vertical into the air. If used to attack the flying creature, the result would be landing in the lava. We ultimately couldn't defeat the creature, but had a chance if this attack could have been enacted. I imagine, based on the write-up of how the pack works, this was just an oversight/misunderstanding?

As a Free Action once per combat, the wearer may use a melee weapon (using melee combat modifiers) to attack flying or levitating monsters. It allows a character to leap up, attack, and land safely back in the same spot from which it took off. This item neither impairs nor improves the ability to perform normal attacks or spell castings. The effect lasts one round.

This effect does not teleport the character to the monster–the character physically moves up to the creature. Bars, force fields, or similar impediments to movement could prevent the attacker from reaching the intended target.
