TOPIC: Medallion of Energy Question

Medallion of Energy Question 5 years 8 months ago #1

New to the forums and only been playing for a couple of years (casually). I had a question regarding the item Medallion of Energy ( tokendb.com/token/medallion-of-energy/ ).

If you are re-casting a spell as a scroll, do you get bonuses from item such as Greater Arcane Scroll Tube ( tokendb.com/token/greater-arcane-scroll-tube/ )?

If you're re-casting a spell, do you retain damage spell bonuses such as Lenses of Focus ( tokendb.com/token/lenses-of-focus/ )?

Lastly, if you're recasting magic missile as a scroll would you retain the bonus of something like kinetic accelerator ( tokendb.com/token/kinetic-accelerator/ )?

I would like to understand the rules before investing the time to transmuting for something like Arcane Scroll Tube. :)

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

“Cast as a scroll” is traditional shorthand for “cannot be modified in any way.” That came about before the ASTs which, paradoxically, DO modify scrolls, but not things LIKE scrolls. Therefore:

If you are re-casting a spell as a scroll, do you get bonuses from item such as Greater Arcane Scroll Tube ( tokendb.com/token/greater-arcane-scroll-tube/ )?

No. You’ll note this link specifically says “scrolls,” not “spells cast by or as scroll.” I realize it might seem ambiguous without knowing some of the background.

If you're re-casting a spell, do you retain damage spell bonuses such as Lenses of Focus ( tokendb.com/token/lenses-of-focus/ )?

No

Lastly, if you're recasting magic missile as a scroll would you retain the bonus of something like kinetic accelerator ( tokendb.com/token/kinetic-accelerator/ )?

No

It’s always good to check first. ASTs are still pretty good.

Thanks!

Any time :)

From the first link you had:

"The bonus spell is “cast as a scroll” (meaning it cannot: benefit from a skill test, be duplicated, be cast as a Free Action, nor be modified in any way.)"

The key there is "nor modified in any way". So the answer to your questions are: No. No. No.

The wording makes it easy to be confused by this. I really wish we had a different phrase instead of "cast as a scroll".

It might be worth it to revisit this both from a wording standpoint and conceptually.

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

Possible keyword could be "Unmodifiable". I'm sure there are plenty of other possible keywords to denote that the damage and/or healing from an effect can't be altered ... "Unalterable".
