Would it have all slots possible? Up to 8 charms, for example?

That's a good idea too. I think there is enough interest for me to try this out, I'll just need some time to work on it.

If anybody wants to volunteer some graphics design for a free mat let me know. I have the artwork, but I need to put the token slots on top.

I have never understood the appeal of token mats. (I'm not referring to yours specifically Kirk, just tokens mats in general.) In my mind, we (forumites, not first-time players) have FAR superior options for character creation. Nevertheless, one likes what one likes and I'm fine with differing opinions.

That said, I am a bit stupefied that someone might be eager to spend two figures for a token mat, but would not be willing to support one of our own's efforts by purchasing the character generator app for iOS/Android for a measly three bucks.

I'd say most that would spend money on a token mat already has purchased the app or uses the spreadsheet. Personally a mat would be easier for preparing for a con because you can stack multiple tokens of the same slot that you own on a space instead of the all encompassing list that the app shows you of tokens you may or may not own. That way you can compare them easily. The best example is when I was trying to figure out how to give my rogue build psychic ability, free movement, and no sneak attack delay since I wanted to wear both the hood and charming crown but had to change to either the amulet for psychic or the boots of elvenkind and figure out which was more optimal. Hopefully one of the app designers finds a way to enter your collection and only allow you to pull from it when building a character.

I'd also wager there is a number of people that just prefer the tactile feel of moving tokens around when planning a character build as opposed to just selecting a bunch of names from some drop down menus.

I take it the Dreamcrusher does not have young children or older parents that remember buggy whips :)

And I can see the mats being useful to help newbies. The character generator app is great...if you already know what your doing.

I assume that is because, in the full site, you get to see the physical tokens?

I like the idea of a mat, though I admit I probably wouldn't buy one.

Since I compile multiple builds, I use the app, pull out the tokens and, when I'm done, dump said tokens into labeled tubes.

Or, for loaners, into ziplock snack bags to store in a 300-count poker chip case.

Mats let you make mistakes. Apps don't. Maybe the fact I was managing something like 16 different builds for various situations forced me to be a little more focused.

I'm sure the mats will look cool. But I have neither young kids, nor time to screw around. YMMV

I have no children of my own (and never will), but I have niblings who are 2 and 3. My parents are in their 70s. Not quite buggy whips, but close.

I used paper 'mats' to lay out tokens for party prep. I drew them myself by 'tracing' the outline of 30 tokens on a sheet of paper that I photocopied a bunch :P

That way I can physically verify that I have every token I think I have, and move things around between characters in a party until I get them where I want. Then I record them (and the party) in an app, and store all the tokens in silver eagle cubes.

For a single characters, I'll just make it in the app.

Why not both? I like and have several printed and laminated character mats to use for character building. I use the app for myself as i know what i have and don't for main builds. The printed mats serve when i'm doing loaner builds to seeing if i have as many copies of a given token as i think i do (especially on rares and uncommons). The mats serve really well for friends of mine who build out of my gear and like to physically go through and build their class build before con. I'll input those builds into spreadsheet later for party card and to make sure the math is right.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

One thing a mat allows that the current apps don't (as far as I recall): You can break the rules temporarily. It gets frustrating to try to equip the Lenses of Divine Sight only to first have to scroll down to equip the Charm of Enlightenment so I can scroll back to put the Lenses in. Is that a minor irritation? Yes. Does it get really freaking annoying when you're trying out different builds? YES.

That said, I've purchased both the Android and iOS apps, and use them all the time. And use the spreadsheet as well. When I have time, I'll likely make more use of the web tools, I just haven't gotten around to those much yet. Would I buy a mat for character building? Maybe, maybe not. Are we done adding slots for a while? How about items that add extra slots? Given that I suspect the answer to at least one of those is "no", I'd lean towards a less expensive mat rather than a nicer one for now.

Now a mat that I'd consider more would probably be one that helps me with laying things out for transmuting trade goods... barring a new type of trade good, that one shouldn't need to change for a while.

I have printed out player mats for newbies that I'm introducing to the game. Personally I'd often times rather tweak my character with tokens and then enter it into my app of choice. Partly because of what Fiddy talked about (it can be annoying to deal with some of the constraints when first building a character). I also like playing with tokens I guess :)

I personally use the apps!

However, for new players I try to show how to build a character class without the app. I use a "home" made token character sheet. I would pick up a playmat from Kirk in a heartbeat! It really shows new players the options they have as they build their characters.
