The idea would be to set a challenge to the player base, which if they achieve generates some interesting effect in a future year (or avoids a bad effect).

The mechanism would be to seed the Gen Con treasure box with some "unique" tokens that thematically would be fragments of an artifact.

Like Voltron, they could assemble into a functional effect.

Here is the catch: the effect of the assembled Artifact would grant a one year boon (or perhaps curse - artifacts are finicky things!) on the player base.

Here is a concrete example of how this might work:

1. At Gen Con 2017 the treasure boxes would be seeded with, say, 4 each of the following white backed tokens:

* Crown of the Barbarian King
* Hides of the Barbarian King
* Talisman of the Barbarian King
* Signet of the Barbarian King

2. These tokens would have no in game effect, but would have a URL to truedungeon.com/fragments or something explaining that:

3. For each complete set of 4 "Barbarian King" tokens turned in to True Dungeon before the end of Gen Con all players will get +1 to melee hit and damage at Gen Con 2018. (Or, perhaps the deadline could be extended a few weeks and they could be redeemed by mail).

Or, there could be more of them that combined in different ways and gave boosts to just some classes, e.g. Barbarian King stuff for Barb, Fighters, another cycle for Wizards, Bard, another for Druid, Ranger, Cleric, etc.

The idea probably needs a lot of fine tuning, but in essence I'm wondering if there is a way to create a community wide "scavenger hunt" for us all to solve with our treasure pulls.

One thing I'm not sure of is whether tokens put out like this would actually get redeemed, or if the allure of owning unicorn-rarity tokens (even if they do nothing) might prove too attractive for some collectors. Perhaps the fragments could be cursed: "The owner of this token may never draw treasure."

collectors would not want to turn them in..so it would be incomplete

Yeah you would need more than 1 set. Could be a new player doesn't know what they got. Or it's buried in the mixer and never pulled. But I like the idea. Could be 5 sets and then everyone gets +1 HP per completed set turned in. Or maybe if you turn it in you get an individual bonus to encourage it.
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Yup.

Even if these just end up as defacto "artisan tokens" - it could be OK too - they might be a nice valuable pull that doesn't contribute to power creep.

I dunno how this would work with the addition of other conventions. I also don't think anything vould start this TD season. Interesting idea. With all the 'issues' involving treasure do we want something else that may make it more complicated?

I would suggest maybe instead a mega puzzle. Maybe a clues are rotated around rooms and times. We would need to compile them as a community. Just a thought.

Thinking about this - this part is easily fixable: the tokens are numbered, and instead of being turned in they are just presented and the numbers are crossed off to prevent them from being used more than once.

Then the owners can just keep them but there is no reason to not present them.

I like this idea, needs exploring though.

This sounds a lot like a variation of Lore tokens.

I've been advocating special Treasure Box only tokens for a long time, maybe a new version of Artisan tokens, or even just variants of existing tokens (maybe with a different background ). Or maybe a few different tokens that can be combined to transmute to something cool.

In addition to the 2006 Artisan tokens, there was the Boots of Warmth back in 2009, along with the infamous Alchemist Pouch of 2007.

Thanks, I'd forgotten the Boots of Warmth was a Treasure Box only token.

One problem with any treasure-only token is that it will encourage people to get as many treasure chips as possible- by farming, ghosting, lending TEs in exchange for treasure, etc - all those things that we seem to be frantically trying to regulate, if not stamp out.
