It also does not specify weather it is melee or ranged so could a ranger handle two of these in hand to hand? considering it covers all the monsters in the room, this could get pretty messy, especially in grind.

In fact, both Monk and Ranger character cards DO specify that they only get a double-handed attack in "hand to hand." (The Ranger's says it in the Tutorial section.) Please check the TDb entry for Frostnut . It most definitely is a ranged weapon.
