Hi all,

My name is Trent and I wanted to say howdy to everyone! I've been reading the forums for a month or so, and have enjoyed reading about True Dungeon and token collecting.

I'm new to Gen Con and True Dungeon (2016 will be my first time), but I've already caught the token collecting bug! I've gotten tokens from Jeff, Kirk, Brad, eBay, etc., and so far everyone has been super helpful and nice. The TD community seems like a really great bunch of people.

Even though I'm an older guy (late 40's), I actually just got into D&D as well. And I'm loving that too. I also started a mini collection of 5e minis, and that's been tons of fun.

In case anyone's curious, I work in NYC as a Project Manager of software developers, and I'm also an actor/director. I'm looking forward to meeting more people/fans of token collecting on the forums, and seeing you guys at Gen Con as well.

:)

Trent

Hi Trent

It is nice to "meet" you

I am new also... I did True Dungeon last year, both puzzle runs, and fell in love. I am in my mid-40's and have a wife who doesn't support my passions. She doesn't even know that the main reason for my trip the first of August is GenCon and True Dungeon.. Luckily there is a financial conference that starts just before GenCon I need to attend as well, so I am "staying" for gaming. I registered for the Forums maybe earlier this year but never ever did a post until recently...

Too often in the past on other forums people were critical and judgmental of my posts. But, after reading as a silent observer here, I never saw this (other than friendly banter), so i finally decided to be more of an active participant. Everyone has been kind and understanding of my simplistic questions.

I started D&D back when it was only "Basic" and "Advanced"... at the age of 7, with my brothers and then friends. Today I stick mainly with Pathfinder.

I recently have been "bitten" by the True Dungeon bug myself... and can't seem to stop picking up new tokens whenever I see something new and different.

I also work in software development... basically in charge of "special projects", which can mean managing developers on new software systems, to "swat team leader" when a problem or crisis arises, I get to find the solution no matter what it takes.

The True Dungeon orientation class at GenCon was very helpful for me. I luckily could attend before my first True Dungeon run and it helped me to have more fun! I even plan on attending this year even though I attended last year.

I look forward to meeting you, as well as lots of other people I have meet here on the Forum, and even on eBay while collecting!

See you soon

Myron

Thanks bpsymington!

I'm leaning towards Barbarian. My memory isn't the greatest, so I don't think I should try to memorize charts...hehe.

Hi Myron,

I'm trying to convince the lady of the house to fall in love with TD and D&D, but that hasn't worked out yet. I'm going to keep trying though!

I think my Gen Con schedule might be too tight for the orientation class, but I have a few new friends that are Gen Con & TD veterans, who i met at my FLGS, so they're going to show me the ropes.

See you around!

Hi Myron and Trent, welcome to True Dungeon! It's a wonderful community, and I'm glad you've joined it! :)

If you do end up having to play a class that requires memorization, don't let it worry you too much. Almost all your spells will work whether you succeed or fail at the memorization test, they just work a bit better if you succeed. As someone that plays a class that requires memorization (Druid) and who has failed on a pretty decent percentage of memorization tests, I can attest that you can have fun playing those classes no matter how well you do on the tests. Just go in and plan on enjoying the room, the combats and puzzles, the DMs and NPCs and special effects, and especially the comradery of your group, no matter what obstacles or setbacks you may have along the way.

Hi Mike and thanks for the warm welcome. I've played a fighter a lot in D&D, but I've recently been trying a cleric and it's a lot of fun. Maybe I'll consider cleric for TD as well.

Thanks for the tips!

Mike Steele wrote: Almost all your spells will work whether you succeed or fail at the memorization test

All spells with skill tests still will work if you fail the test. When it comes to spells, there is no penalty for skill test failure, just a bonus for success.

There are only two skill tests that result in nil results if you fail, but neither are spells:
  • Failing the bard's monster lore skill check simply means you don't get bonus info about the monster.
  • The rogue's box is a physical challenge, not a memorization test. There are two "second chance" options for failing the rogue skill challenge: Masterwork Thieves' Tools and +2 Rod of Persuasion . Using an Ektdar's Tinkering Tool will make the test 50% easier.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

Welcome Trent, great to see fresh meat faces! ;)

I'm curious how you came to discover TD. Most folks only visit our little forum after they've played. I wish more folks were like you.

A lot of us are. If I may paraphrase Dame Edna, I'm approaching 40... from the wrong direction! :silly:

Hi Druegar, thanks for the tips about the skill tests, and a big thank you for the Token Database! I browse through that site every day or so.

My new D&D friends have gone to Gen Con for years. and when we signed up recently for my first Gen Con, they told me about True Dungeon. It sounded amazing, so I went to the main website, read about the game, the tokens, etc. I kept clicking around and one thing led to another...BOOM...obsessed with collecting tokens!

Hello Trent,
Welcome - if you haven't already you can check to see the various party organization threads in the forums and maybe pre-meet up with the people you will be on your runs. If you're lucky you'll be able to plan out classes and difficulty that way. If you can't find the rest of your party don't sweat it.

I would advise to get to your run a bit in advance of the run time if a particular class is of interest - up to 30 minutes early will increase your odds of getting a particular class.

Just be careful

I am totally addicted and I don't even want to think how much I have spent, er, ah, invested...

I have maxed out my Paladin, Equipped both fighters, now am working on a Druid, all just in case my preferred classes are already taken.
