TOPIC: Found my first fake token

Found my first fake token 7 years 11 months ago #1

Up until now I didn't know if I was just blind or really lucky but I hadn't yet come across a fake token (or at least not one that I was aware of). I have no idea if this was the same quality as other fakes, but in this case it was really easy to spot. There was no seal over the token label and as such it had some scuffs on the printing and with your fingernail you could scratch off the printing. It was much thinner than a real label which means you could feel the texture of the token through it, and it was lower than the lip around the edge of the token (a real token label is thick enough that it is actually higher than the lip around the token).

I wanted to share the details I noticed in case ti helps anybody else. I did send it to Jeff and he confirmed it was fake. I'm pretty sure the person I got it from did not know it was fake. Additionally it was the only problematic token out of a few hundred tokens I received from him. For the record I was a little surprised by the exact token that it was; 2008 Bracer of Quivering Palm.

Someone in the forums a while back related how they were on a run with a pick up group who had made a bunch of fake tokens for themselves (not simply proxies for weapons).

So, I suppose it's possible some counterfeiting is not for purposes of resale, but rather to play with tokens one doesn't have - this happens in magic tournaments as well where people will make counterfeits solely for the benefit of playing with cards they don't own.

I think both behaviors are bad for the game, but it would explain the existence of counterfeit random urs rather than 5000 GP bars...

Even thought the person may not have know, care to share who you received the Token from? I would like to know, not to go on a witch hunt or anything but just in case I wind up trading with that person sometime in the future.

This is probably one reason proxies aren't allowed. Even if you make one just for your "own use" there's a danger it can escape out into the wild.

Apologies for necro-ing an old thread but this seemed like the best place to post.

I recently acquired a UR circa 2007 (I think?) on which the printing is a little fuzzy. What it looks like is that effect you get when your printer nozzles need cleaning - sort of a double image/double vision effect.

The laminate feels correct.

I worked in printing for many years and it's the sort of thing we'd see from time to time in a less than perfect print.

Has anyone else seen this on tokens from that time period?

I don't want to get into specifics yet because I believe it's probably an authentic misprint, and I don't want to create suspicion of the source unless there's reason to believe it's counterfeit and intnetional.

Yes, there was a printing in 2007 where the text was a bit "fuzzy". I received one Horn of Plenty awhile back and I had it authenticated by TPTB.

Without any further information we can't tell you if it is authentic but it should at least be comforting that there was a printing like that from that year.

Always good to keep a watchful eye!
