TOPIC: Extra Treasure Pulls v.s. Better Gear

Re: Extra Treasure Pulls v.s. Better Gear 8 years 6 months ago #13

For max treasure, Charm of Avarice is $1000 and gives ~12 treasure/run. At $3/pull that's $36/run. 1000/36 = 28 runs to pay for itself. 8 runs/year = 3.5 years. Your math may vary.

Much more reasonable is Amulet of Treasure Finding which gives 4 pulls ($12) for $95. That pays for itself in 8 runs. Not a bad option.

So as others have said, it depends to what level of involvement you want to go & your budget.

For someone only doing 1 or 2 runs per year, I'd say skip both. You'll get 3 guaranteed pulls in 2016 anyway to satisfy your desires for loot :)
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Anthony Barnstable wrote: The approach I have taken is buy treasure enhancing tokens for 10 party members and run with strangers or friends that lack TEs. That way, I give each of them +1 treasure and they give me the rest of the bonus treasure tokens I gain them. It makes runs give very large numbers of treasure tokens.

I did something similar. I lent out amulets of treasure finding and let the people borrowing them keep all of their pulls. I was working on karma rather than greed. Made the new players happy and I felt good about myself.

I was trying to suggested that if you wish to profit by grinding runs and then trading you will have to:

A. Be really into trading.
B. Likely be willing to take advantage of people.

I don't know. I think you could make a decent profit (early in the Con) by grinding some runs and quickly selling all the monster trophies (I hear GamingEtc will sometimes offer a good amount for trophies, at least until they reach their saturation point).

You expect to get 3-5 monster trophies from 15 pulls - is gaming etc really paying anywhere near 10 bucks a trophy?

I feel folks should go with what they think makes TD a fun experience for them.

As long as you're doing that it's all good in the under-hood. :)

I was hearing that they were paying like $10-$15.

When I was trying to trade with newbies this year, a small handful of them said they were going to sell their monster trophies to GamingEtc.

Also, there were several forumites who were willing to pay $10-$15 at the beginning of GenCon for some of the new monster trophies.

I agree, do what's fun, I enjoy pulling treasure as much as I like the tokens I get, so for me my priority would be treasure :)

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

It's all about that loot...
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

I always lean towards more treasure pulls. I'd definitely recommend getting an AoTF this year as a PYP. Spending a premium to get the out of print loot tokens is more of a judgment call, as they are pricey and could be reprinted.

What I really like is that people have several different opinions on the "right" answer to this question. It is a healthy market when different people have different goals.

I've been able to work on getting both top-level gear (well, not including legendaries, and I will be getting my first eldritch item with the boots this year) and treasure-enhancing tokens. That's because I've been playing TD for a long time, I only outfit myself, and just for one class (wizard). Being a full-time volunteer has also been a big help in this area.
