TOPIC: Tokens for newish player/collector

Re: Tokens for newish player/collector 8 years 8 months ago #13

Definitely go for depth of class choices.

There is a lot of overlap between Fighter/Paladin, Bard/Ranger/Rogue/Fighter, Fighter/Barbarian for your melee classes.

AC/saves for your casters.

At least for the moment you need an IS Amethyst Ovid for that Tooth to be useful.

Yeah, planning on picking one of those up when the preorders start for 2016 tokens.

To clarify, I plan on getting the Amethyst Ovid, AoTF and Earcuff of Orbits with a 4th PYP TBD (probably something from the 2016 group). I don't see my selection of those 3 2015 URs changing regardless of what comes out this coming year.

Those are all solid choices. The only one I'm waiting on personally it the ioun since I suspect there will be other ways to awaken psychic powers and I wouldn't mind waiting a little longer to see what they are.

It is good advice to try to get tokens that allow you to play multiple classes. Cleric/Paladin/Fighter share many armor tokens, while fighter/barbarian share many weapon tokens. I play a wizard, so my tokens are pretty much just limited to general and wizard tokens - luckily, there are two wizards to play, and they seem to be in lesser demand than other classes.

For gameplay I think the priority are tokens that make your play experience better. For most characters getting to Level 5 makes the character more interesting. For Bard getting some UR instruments makes the game better. For Rogue perhaps Ektdar's Tinkering Tool or Librahm of Looting. There are other examples for other classes.

I'm going to focus on collecting assuming you are going to be spending $1k+/yr on tokens like many of us do. If you want to spend say $100/yr then I can adjust the suggestions.

For collecting, the first priority should be treasure-enhancers. We don't know what the future would bring, but Charm of Avarice would be at the top of my list if I could afford it and didn't have one already. You can buy one from a reputable reseller or you can craft one yourself with seven 2015 Amulets of Treasure Finding that will still be available as a PYP next year.

The next big thing to consider around collecting is also pretty pricey, but that would be the Eldritch items. You already have a 1st Tooth of Cavadar, so you should plan to get the next six teeth over the next six years, either from resellers or by spending $1k/yr or more directly with True Dungeon.

But then there are the upcoming Eldritch Boots. As of right now (I think) you can still get the Boots of the East Wind as a PYP with a $250 order from True Dungeon, and you'll get 30 ten-packs too. But you'd then want to find a Boots of the North Wind from 2013 which sell for $350+ these days. But it will almost certainly be more expensive to get them later. The other two boots will be available as a PYP in 2016 so they will be easy to get.

And if all of that isn't enough for you then you can buy a Rod of Seven Parts and/or a Supreme Ring of Elemental Command. They are expensive but probably aren't going to get any cheaper, also it probably depends on how much you want the 3-piece Eldritch set bonus once it is announced.

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

When you say "collector," what does that mean? What is your goal.

I set mine as "one of every chip from 2007 on, with some exceptions." You said something about archiving, so maybe you're similar.

If so, I'm going to say to do almost the exact opposite of what others are saying. Go for the crappiest, most useless tokens first. (At least the oldest ones.) Why? Because, as time goes on, more and more of them are going to get turned into trade tokens.common armor and scrolls of knock and rumors do nothing now. Get them before they get turned in.

There are different interpretations of what being a "collector" means here.

-Collecting sets? As in one of everything? That is a long, long road and will take a LONG time and lots of money to do.
-Collecting just the most valuable tokens to try to flip them for profit? That can also take a lot of money and can be risky.
-Collecting just to play? That can be done fairly cheap and inexpensive by just going after playable tokens at the common, uncommon and rare level. You'd never need a single UR token going that route and you could easily play up to Hardcore mode that way with no worries.

All depends on what you want to do.

This is mostly what I mean when I say collector. Would like to get RUC sets for as many of the years as possible. Not planning to collect all the URs at all, it's far more than I am willing to invest at this points for time being, any UR I go after would be for playing purposes.

Welcome to the forum.

I was going to ask if you were looking to make complete sets..

For 2014, 15, and 16 that should be really easy, as some of the venders sell complete sets. What I think you'd be most interested is the Onxy sets, as they are special black chips that aren't circulated through in standard packs. They only come from special large orders.

Farther back than 2014, and you will most likely have to build the sets yourself. And building an onyx set would be extremely hard (IMO).

Venders:
Lazlo may have some even though I did see any listed on his thread:
http://www.truedungeon.com/forum?func=view&catid=583&id=173718

Kirk does have some here:
http://www.tdtavern.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=38&zenid=ea4tp4rvvd1rpu113blgvs4l77

There are others that might have full sets, I didn't look long.

Yeah, I should print out the yearbook and get on that. Not too concerned about the onyx set. Would be just happy with gold backed ones.
