TOPIC: History of "Reprints" (especially regarding HoP)

History of "Reprints" (especially regarding HoP) 9 years 7 months ago #1

So there has been a lot of "vigorous" discussion about HoP's and reprints in the Token Development threads.

Many newer players weren't around at the time so they might be completely unaware of the issue with HoP's, reprints, and the "reserve list."

Even many of the older players will have forgotten some of the details. I actually had to browse through my old e-mails for some details and I am sure I am probably missing some examples.

So, for educational purposes, here is a little trip down memory lane:

#1. The Horn of Plenty was first printed in 2007, and was available as a PYP (the first year that PYP was offered).

* Cannot recall if people could actually choose it in 2008. The "this year and last year's choice of PYP's" policy didn't officially exist until 2011 I believe, after backlash from 2010's "PYP from any year."

#2. In 2009, HoP's were made available in limited quantities:

SPECIAL PROMOTION: The Golden Ticket contest is over, but we have come up with another promotion to say thanks for ordering tokens now - when we need the funding. All gamers placing a token order in July will have a chance to draw a 2007 "Horn of Plenty" token as their random "1 in 100 pack" Ultra Rare. During the month of July, 50% off all random Ultra Rare tokens will be a "Horn of Plenty" token, so that means 1 out of every 200 10-packs will contain a "Horn of Plenty" token. The promotion will last until all the "HoP" tokens are gone, but this text will be immediately updated when that occurs. And don't forget, you still get to pick one 2009 Ultra Rare token for every $250 in tokens you buy.

* IIRC, this was the initial "reprint equivalent" that got people upset, and it was around this time that Jeff agreed to put the HoP on the no reprint, reserve list.

#3. Over the next few years, a few HoP's were occasionally introduced (or re-introduced). Golden Ticket occasionally had some - I know that the year of the easter egg Chaos Beast, one of the eggs had a HoP. And also the HoP's that were turned in for artifacts were reseeded (IIRC in random treasure generators).

#4. 2012 and 2013 had the Mithral Coin of Fate, which made HoP's available. Again.

#5. And now apparently this upcoming year, HoP's will essentially be available again (in some form).

Furthermore, throughout this entire period, the HoP power has also been often available through the Amulet of Wonder. Going through the TokenDB, you have:

2009 Gen Con: Effect determined by a d6 roll made during coaching:
1: +1 to AC
2: +2 to AC
3: +3 to AC
4: +3 to max HP
5: +3 to all saving throws
6: Double Horn of Plenty effect (six Treasure Chips per stamp)

2010 Dungeon: Effect determined by a d6 roll made during coaching:
1: +1 to Reflex saving throws
2: +3 to Reflex saving throws
3: +3 to max HP
4: +5 to max HP
5: Immunity to Fire
6: Double Horn of Plenty effect (six Treasure Chips per stamp)

2011 Dungeon: Effect determined by a d6 roll made during coaching:
1: +1 to all saving throws
2: +2 to all saving throws
3: +3 to all saving throws
4: +5 to max HP
5: +1 Character level for that adventure
6: Double Horn of Plenty effect (six Treasure Chips per stamp)

2013 Dungeon: Horn of Plenty effect (three Treasure Chips per stamp)

2014 Dungeon: Effect determined by a d6 roll made during coaching:
1: +2 to AC
2: +3 to AC
3: +3 To Hit on all attack slides
4: +10 to max HP
5: Horn of Plenty effect (three Treasure Chips per stamp)
6: +1 Character level for that adventure*
*If already 5th-level, gain the Horn of Plenty effect instead. Read this forum post for additional permutations.

So for every year from 2009 - 2014, except for one (2012), the AoW has had a 16% chance of giving you the HoP effect (sometimes a Double HoP effect).

AoW was printed in 2008 and 2013, and before its reprint there were admittedly times when it was almost as scarce as the HoP.

And finally, on the issue of reprints, for even tokens like the 2007 Nightshade's +2 Short Sword, the 2008 Ektdar's Tinkering Tool, and the 2008 Widseth's Lute, they were already "effectively reprinted" once by being made available again - in 2010!

Maybe you guys are forgetting that in 2010:

*NOTE: Ultra Rare choices: You may pick ANY Ultra Rare token as your gold choice UR (if you spend over $250) from 2007-2010 collections -- except the Horn of Plenty and the Amulet of Wonder.

Has the PYP always come with $250 worth of tokens?

I only ask because I seem to recall token packs costing $10 back in '09-'10 when I first tried True Dungeon.

Yes, PYP always came in $250 increments.

A few years ago they did reprice the cost of individual ten-packs.
