Candace still uses her woodie +2 Gearon's Mace.

The magnets are VERY small, but strong enough to hold a token. The neo mags I have are roughly one half inch by one quarter inch. They shouldn't have any issue causing sliders to clump or repel.

I won't get too technical here - but simply put the neodymium magnets - particularly the cylindrical ones have exceptionally strong attraction at the poles (the flat circle ends of the cylinders) and relatively weaker attraction along the body (the round cylinder walls). Also - the magnetic field strength dies off quickly -
{ as an inverse-cube function (1/x3) }

Oh - and imbedding a ring of permeable sheet metal around the circumference of the magnet would effectively bleed away (or shield) the magnet from interactions with other magnets.

Lastly - to Ingog's point on woodies like Candace's - I'll work that into my considerations! A woodie friendly chippie grabber I shall endeavor to create!

Honestly the woodie wouldn't be negatively effected by a magnetic slider but it wouldn't be positively either (to keep in place). Hence if it was difficult or costly no changes would only be impacting a small percentage of people.

Does anyone have the official dimensions of the existing sliders to work with?

My concern with woodies was, if the magnet were just glued into the puck, it would be a little wobbly pedestal that would let the token fly out easier.

If you're going to countersink the magnets to be flush, then that goes away. It still won't grab wood, of course.

Cool magnet idea.

Concern: Token wobble
If the magnet is raised, then depending on the strength, the token may wobble when slid, stopping, or bumped, wobble may change the tokens orientation.

Possible solution: ring magnet, flush, with a hole in the bottom of the puck for a finger to push out the puck.

Woodies would still fit.

Although the ring magnet would be more expensive.

Large circle magnet may have an issue with repelling other pucks (or attracting). Be careful with strength.

This is where if Jeff wanted a new slider design he should chime in. No sense us prototyping a bunch of designs only to be told he wants to stick to the old sliders.

If he wants a new design then he could also award a design prize (token named after you, GPs, etc.)

I've got a full woodworking shop - and a rough idea of the dimensions of the slider... I'll play around with this some (after I finish Kubu's coin holder charm!).

I can see what will and won't work - plus I've got a BUNCH of different magnets to play with.

And the ring magnets are a good solution to the "easy out" problem but extend the axial magnetic field radiation problem... however with a larger surface area you could achieve similar pull on a token with a weaker field magnet... (which coincidentally costs less than the rare earth).

Again - lots of good thoughts floating around!

Would using gripping shelf liner on the inside of the puck work for securing the woodies? It wouldn't do much if it hit the floor, but it might help keep them in place when they're bumped on the table.

Xavon wrote: My question is, would the magnets interfere with the sliding? Magnets attract or repel based on the polar orientation, so it might cause clumps that don't break apart like they currently might, or sliding disturbances without actual contact.

This idea of magnets can make for a interesting combat where space is warped around the monster and Jeff uses sliders with your magnets in them in conjunction with magnets under the table.
