I don't get it...penalizes the indie trader for what? Not being willing to pay as much as those willing to pay more?

I'm scratching my head too. :dontknow:

I figure anyone who calls a trader a hack will move on to the next trader and see if he gets a better off. If he can't, well, the market has set a price. I imagine that a lot of people are hoping to find newbies to skin and the competition should ensure that no one gets completely shafted. Those buying won't get the best deals in the world, and those selling don't end up going home sans purple with a handful of magic beans.

I've been waffling back and forth on the notion of sitting in the tavern and trading. While I now have a metric buttload of tokens (and plan on getting some more), there's nothing I really want with the possible exception of old tokens (starting fresh and trying to complete old sets now would be crazy for even me) and ultra rares (and, being ultra rare, that means hours of sitting around in the hopes that someone fresh from their run will want to sell at which point a bidding frenzy breaks out amongst the folks in the tavern).

For the handful I want, I'd rather pay a premium over list price before or after the con and use my time there to enjoy GenCon.

I'm building a rack because (a) I love craft projects just for the sake of doing them (see: The Cubes in "The Great Escape" ) and (b) I've tried using a poker chip case for my tokens, but really want to store them horizontally to make shuffling through them for a trade (and fondling my precious-es) easier.

Yep - you guys are right...let's just set-up one person trading per hour and they can ask whatever prices they want...isn't a monopoly possible in a capitalistic society??? That would be great for the players...maybe we would get the TD store back real quick - JK
Staggered - now that's a good idea... I sketched mine to use 4 dowels per token, but if you only used 3 (two on the top and one on the bottom) and alternated the 2-by and 1-by rows, it would give you some needed finger space!

>runs off to secret lab<

Illustration uses 1/4" dots for 1/4" dowel rod. Spacing between dowel rod edges is 1 3/4" on the row.
Rows are staggered from edge to edge 7/8" down and 7/8" to the side.
1 3/4" and 7/8" do not include the 1/4" of the dowel rod, thus why I say edge to edge.

Dowels were staggered like this:

Please note, I did not make the token racks, however I did work with them, and using a token and image program fairly easily got the numbers as I would work with everything 100% display so I could hold my token against the screen to see if it would fit and if my numbers were right that I guesstimated for dowel placement.
Anyways, hope that helps.

I think that works better than 2:1 dowel pegging...

Thanks Sis!

Those that stock more can obviously give better deals than those that do not. Its the same way Wal-Mart can out-do all the Mom+Pop stores, since it stocks better it has better deals on everything. Its simple economics, and if TD is going the way of many traders, then it will start to apply here too.

Noone will badmouth anyone else, but traders in the union will refer each other and have a significant advantage through word of mouth.
How many people actually plan on spending a good chunk of their time trading? I'm concerned as this will be the first time a lot of people want to do it, and I don't want this to be a game of cutthroat.

I plan on spending a good amount of time. I am open to "business arrangements" that would prevent any cutthroat dealing to occur. Certain people having specialty items, not duplicating package items, etc.

Well in a sense - we would all be a Wal-Mart (a chain of them if you will)...it would just come down to customer service and any personal preferences of the shoppers...

i am going to be trading to aquire what i want, HOWEVER i will also help other traders to get things that i am not interested in. after all, once you have a set, why would you need more of the same? half the fun is the trading/haggling. helping another trader will undoubtably, come back to benefit you.

I'm from a big union family, but I am anti-union in this instance.

So, if there is a trader's union... do we pay dues? Do we have meetings? Who's the president? Do we have a treasurer? Secretary? Whip? Do the agreed upon prices only go into effect in the Tavern, or is it a con-wide thing?

I'd so much rather the Tavern turn into a Bazaar, where you have to hock your wares, and the best salesman wins. Vigorous competition, benefits to the buyers, and a heck of a lot less hassle than organizing a union.

Yeah, if a purple comes out of the dungeon, and someone wants to sell it, then a bidding war happens. Hurray - welcome to capitalism. If smakdown wants it, he'll win. If not, then whoever wants it the worst will win.

Plus, if it's unionized, what if there is only one trader in the Tavern for a few hours. Now, that person is trapped into selling at the agreed price, when he could easily be getting more because there is no competition.

Free enterprise. Only way to go.
