TOPIC: Character gear building

Character gear building 11 years 4 months ago #1

I'm a new player, I had a great time when I first tried this and I've decided to start collecting some token gear. I'm thinking that for UR's I should focus on generic effects and items that most classes can use so I can have a good shell to build on with whatever classes I play. Does this sound right? Or should I buy more restrictive class-wise gear like say templar armor, and go a more dedicated class route?

The character classes can be divided into two types + Monk and Bard.

If you like sliding you can gear up for one of the Combat classes

Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger

There is a lot of shared gear between them and some nice specific gear. Same goes for the caster classes.

Wizards, Cleric, Druid

If you can memorize things quickly then those classes would be a great choice. If you can't then you might want to stick to the fighter classes.

There was a thread recently with a newer player wanting to get just one UR this year. The general consensus was to get the +1 Level Necklace The Medallion of Heroism because it works with any class and give a huge boost. It does mean that you cannot wear any rings but it can also be upgraded to the charm later. The other item many people thought would be good was the Charm of Good Fortune. I think that one depends on how many TD runs you would be doing each year.

I tried to stay generic but finally settled in on Fighter or Paladin as a class choice. It just got too expensive to try and cover all the bases.

Good point. If you've never played, you don't really know which class you'll fall in love with. This should be your discovery year, do a couple of runs, try a couple of different characters and talk to lots of people. I seldom played clerics in D&D, but I find I really like it in TD. I loved popping last year's undead for 16 turning damage using my UR Holy Symbol. Too bad lycans aren't undead...

And URs are obviously a big investment. Unless you're the latest PowerBall winner, I think you're right to get ones that can be used by any class. You'd probably be better looking at class gear in 2015 - maybe 2014 if you have an epiphany.

And this may sound counter-intuitive, but if your funds are limited, (and whose aren't?) I'd suggest a priority would be to get a token in every slot, even if it's common. Think of this:

A UR weapon is +2 and runs around $100 more or less
A R weapon is +1 and runs around $2-$3
A UC or C weapon is +0 and runs 25 cents to $1

Similar curves apply to almost every type of token: armor, rings, etc. The exceptions are those tokens that have some super-power

And yes, the extra power is worth it, but not if you only have two URs and are running around with all your other slots empty. Your character will be more powerful and harder to kill by trading in that second UR for a bunch of Rare/UC/Common gear.

For a first UR I would go with something generically useful. The +2 save iounstone, or +3 save cloak are solid choices but keep in mind there is a +1 save iounstone and +2 cloak at rare. The +1 level neck is also hard to beat but will grow restrictive if you ever plan to purchase ur rings. The treasure charm is cool but it's usefulness depends on how much you care about treasure and if you can get into groups with enough of them to trigger the synergy effect. Might items are also worth thinking about since while you need 3 to level they also have amazing stats. All in all though I would recommend getting solidly red equipped before you worry about urs. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

If he is building enough to get a PYP he should get a solid assortment of Rares.

Agreed Picc. My second year at TD I had one UR but I was totally red other than that one. I Still use my Boots of Free Action most of the time. They have come in quite handy.

Although if a wizard did a detect magic on me now he would end up blind for several weeks.

i would think the +2 save ioun stone is a great choice.
first, it is from last years set, any of the items in this years set will still be available next year.
any class can use it.
it may not be as highly sought after right now, but i actually expect that once it is, it will be impossible to get. it is the best ioun stone, of which you have 5 slots, and instead of replacing its rare counterpart it works along side of it. i dont expect there to be 5 ioun stones worth replacing it with for the forseeable future.
this is not a signature.

Patrick,

You are better off to get generic items first, and specific class items later. Until you hit 3rd level, you don't have the ability to grab your choice of class (and even above 3rd level it can be iffy).
With that said, here is a list of available PYPs this year that are better than the rest with pros and cons:

Amulet of Wonder - pros: powerful, fun, changing effect...cons: changing effect, neck slot item

Cloak of Destiny - pros: highest Save bump in game, transmutable...cons: rare +2 cloak is 10% the price

Druegar's Death Die - pros: slotless, permanent raise effect...cons: chance of not working

Medallion of Heroism - pros: 1 item level bump, upgradeable...cons:
loss of ring use, neck slot item

Orb of Might - pros: +2 STR, 1/3 of level bump...cons loss of shield/2 handed weapon/off hand weapon

(2012)
+2 Mithral Bracers - pros: +2 AC in weak slot (bracers), part of Mithral Set (lots of misc bonuses), upgradeable...cons: lose utility of Bracers of Fire or Bracelets of the Zephyr

Charm of Synergy - pros +1-10 hp, charm slot...cons other party members need this to maximize it.

Charm Necklace - pros: allows 3 extra charms to be warn, greatly increasing flexibility/utility in character building...cons: neck slot, have to get charms to fill it.

Crown of Might - pros: +1/+1 melee, 1/3 pieces for level bump...cons: loss of head AC bonus, melee bump does little for ranged or casters.

Ioun Stone Topaz Trilliant - pros: +2 saves, Ioun Stone slot, free extra bonus (darkrift reduction), cons: none (there are not yet 5 overwhelming Ioun Stones)

Ring of Evasion - pros: REF success = 0 damage...cons: ring is a very crowded slot, with only 2 available to the character.

If you still feel compelled to go specific class route, look at the following tokens first:

Figurine of Power: Phoenix
Twolf's Helm
Bowl of Spirit Insight

2012
+2 Dwarven Dire Axe
Earcuff of Energy
Templar Set
The Worst Rogue Ever!
Member of the Michigan Marauders
Ranger Extra-ordinary

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, and the great analytical breakdowns. I think I know what I'm gonna go with moving forward.
