TOPIC: Stacking Runestones with Runestone Base

Stacking Runestones with Runestone Base 8 years 11 months ago #1

As the subject suggests, if you use the Runestone Base can you use the same Runestone twice and have their effects stack? So could I use two Fire Runestones on a sword and get +2 Fire damage? And what if I turned in another as a general +1 Fire damage for every weapon for a total of +3 Fire damage?

i have to agree with mike..that would be like using 2 +2 rings of protection..they shouldn't stack

I thought Runestones did stack, especially in thought of the Runestone fitting base. Why have the capabilities of two slots then? I think Runestones (which you burn) are more like putting batteries in serial, as opposed to permanent items like the RoP +2, which I see more like paralleling batteries.

I was thinking the Runestones were like the Potions of Bull's Strength, they are consumable, but you can only be affected by one at a time no matter how many you drink. Perhaps the multiple slots are because there are different Runestones, and you can use several different ones at a time that way? I'm not certain that they don't stack though, maybe it clarifies it in the token guide?

It doesn't say in the token guild. I double checked last night before starting the thread.

And I was curious because technically you can have three on one weapon.

I think multiple runstones are no different than charms, ioun stones, or any other item that you can wear multiple of... to quote the token guide:

Equipping your character with identical items (i.e. two identical things) is not allowed (e.g., two +1 Rings of Protection).

While you can't equip multiple Summer Runestones (+1 Fire damage w/ melee weapons), what you CAN do (assuming you have 2 Runestone Fitting Bases) is equip a Summer Runstone, a Spring Runestone, and an Autumn Runestone.. meaning all your melee attacks would would do +1 Fire, +1 Shock, and +1 Sonic damage.

That's how I understood it to be.

Okay... being that we're on the topic of the Runestone Fitting base, here's something that's been on my brain as I've been reading the rules.

How do the Melee runes interact with Rangers or Monks?
Example scenario: Playing a Ranger, I have 2 Runestone Fitting Base tokens and I turn in a Summer, Spring, and Autumn runestones, declaring that the Summer is my normal turn in. So which of the follow is now true?

a) Both my melee weapons now deal +1 Fire, +1 Shock, and +1 Sonic damage
b) Both my melee weapons now deal +1 Fire damage, and I have to declare one of the following:
i) My Main Hand weapon also deals an additional +1 Shock, and +1 Sonic damage.
ii) My Main Hand weapons deals an additional +1 Shock and my Off Hand deals +1 Sonic damage.
iii) My Main Hand weapons deals an additional +1 Sonic and my Off Hand deals +1 Shock damage.
iv) My Off Hand weapon also deals an additional +1 Shock, and +1 Sonic damage.

I think whichever weapon is outfitted with the two runestone fittings would get the bonuses from those two Runestones.

Don't forget that the second and third runestones must be rares.

well, technically, only your main runestone applies to both weapons, and the runestones used with the runstone fitting bases are attached to a specific weapon (not even main vs off-hand, but a specific weapon).

BUT, when filling out the party card, it pretty much simplifies in favor of the player for everything. for example, when using both the orb and scepter of might, there are not two seperate +to-hit stats in the box, just the higher one, so you get a free +2to-hit with the orb. i expect the runestones work the same way. technically, you have +1 fire to all melee and an additional +1 shock and +1 sonic situationally, but the party card will simply read a total +3 fire, shock, and sonic (if it matters, i expect the DM will ask how much of each is being dealt, as other sources may come in as well...ie. ring of frost).

i would have picked up a couple runestone bases back then if i realized that stats were going to be simplified like that (i intentionally avoided them because they were only supposed to give the bonus to one weapon, which i felt was a waste as a ranger).
this is not a signature.
