TOPIC: Forming Guild of Token Traders

Forming Guild of Token Traders 12 years 7 months ago #1

Given all the positive feedback from folks, I think we should try to form "The Guild of Token Traders". This guild will be a voluntary association of people who are interested in trading tokens at GenCon.

I would like to propose 3 goals for the guild.

1. To educate new players in the uses and value of their tokens. A price list similar to what Douglas used to do would helpful toward this goal. Also some general guidelines (common is around 5-15 GP and purple is $75 and up on ebay or 3000 or more GP value in trade) should be provided. (I have a bunch of ideas on how to do this, need to find out how much Jeff/GenCon will tolerate)

To clarify, the guild would not set prices for tokens. If you want to sell for less than price list that is fine. If you want to charge more than price list to a knowledgeable buyer that is fine. Taking advantage of new player who doesn't know what a purple is worth is not acceptable.

2. To work with the True Dungeon staff to ensure an area is available that will support and encourage token trading at GenCon.

3. To create a schedule of when people are planning on trading, to make all guild traders aware of when the trading area will be crowded and when it will be less crowded. Knowing the trading area is empty or near empty could cause folks to adjust their trading schedules and provide better coverage for the players. (This schedule would be totally voluntary and non-binding, but it would be helpful)

All guild traders would need to be aware of GenCon rules prohibiting selling tokens for money at GenCon. The people in the dealers area have paid (a lot) for that privilege and we need to do our part not to get them mad at us or True Dungeon.

Other thought/comments are welcome and encouraged

I would be happy to participate.

As far as shifts go, I'm sure we could wait until after event registration, and see when each person has time in order to come with an informal "schedule".

Sounds great, George! I won't be a member since I don't set up to trade tokens at GENCON, but I look forward to seeing it develop and seeing the price guide that you come up with. Good luck! :)

I will likely put the schedule together 2 or 3 weeks before Gencon. And it is more advisory than anything. If 3 or 4 people are already scheduled but it is a good time for you to trade, feel free to show up. Where it will be really useful is seeing, "We dont have anyone from 6-midnight on Friday", you might descide to trade instead of going to the Anime festival.

Sounds like an excellent idea, George.

I'd be interested in helping to draft a "Rough Guide" to token trading, which could be distributed to newbies (so they have a general idea of the what/where/when/how much of token trading) as well as a more detailed "suggested price guide" like the sort Doug used to make. In fact, I started writing a RoughGuide before this Con, but didn't finish it due to time constraints, and for want of knowledgeable proof-readers.

I also approve of your 3 goals, and think they pretty much cover what I'd be looking for in a Trader's Guild.

Here, Here. I would love to join the guild. The 3 trading principles work for me.
1. Educate new players and provide price guidance for veteran players as well
2. Facilitate trading in a way that enhances the brand of TD
3. Scheduling for the con

1. I am happy to proofread, and work with Raven on the draft trading guide and more than happy to provide input for pricing.
2. I would love to work with the TD staff and from the few direct interactions I have had with them (Dave you know what I mean) I am looking forward to it.
3. Having done the retail manager thing, I think I can pull together a schedule for the con.

I'm in. I'm willing to learn, love TD, and now that I earned my degree last May, will HOPEFULLY have a job and income soon, of which some will be spent on becoming a token-holic. ;-)

I know I haven't been terribly active, but it is my intention to be more so now that I have the brood born. I was at gencon and traded this year. I set up next to Henry in 2007 and learned a lot from him (and yes some of it was fair :P ). I keed, I keed, Henry was more than fair to people. Of course my trade experience initially comes from The Raven. In the early days (05 maybe) Raven traded me my first purp (my holy great sword) and later I paid her back with my 2007 special? token. It was the philosophy of great token traders like this that form the basis of the guild that George is talking about. I too was a new guy once and needed help, now I am a token addict and just this year gave out a couple of whole sets including a couple of rares to some new guys who werent outfitted and asked for help. I think that at heart comes from this community. Anyway the long and short is I definitely want to be involved.
