The issue with this logic is that the Black Lotus was only reprinted in early successive sets, same as the Moxes, and the other Power 9. (Alpha, Beta, and Revised) MTG didn't really become super popular until around 4th edition. MTG's model for the longest time was if you spent the money on the rarest/best cards, you would win. It wasn't until maybe 6th or 7th edition where they changed it up by making common/uncommon cards as good (and in some cases) better than the rares. Some rares were still insanely useful, and quite op, but commons could be too (All slivers can go die in a fire). It revitalized the game so that smaller collectors had the ability to make just as good of a deck as the people who spent thousands, as long as you had a few good combos.

Now, if that's what you're proposing, I'd be on board with that, but then the issue becomes how much power creep is being allowed into the game. It's the same with MTG. The new cards obsolete the old ones because they add new mechanics, or abilities that the old ones just can't compare with, and that is why very few cards have any value after the sets are rotated out of tournament play.

I'm just hoping the completed rod isn't a disappointment. I mean, 7 years is a lot time to have waited. It would be beyond depressing if it ended up as bupkis. Jeff has played this one close to the vest so there's no real hint of what we'll be getting. At this point I think I'd really be happy with the +2 across the board if for no other reason then it's a measurable quantity.

It will also have the set ability which is nothing to sneeze at. I do like the idea of doubling the stats also but Jeff might have something interesting in mind that none of us have thought of yet.

I would almost be willing to bet that Jeff has been working on other stuff and doesn't have a clear idea yet of what it will do. Which if true is fine in my book because he still has GenCon to get through and then a several months before anyone will have the last seg to make the completed rod.

I'd much rather Jeff list clear up the confusion on the 2 item Eldritch Set ability, and list what the 3 item Eldritch Set ability will be, now that the first UR for the third Eldritch Item is for sale this year. I always cut Jeff slack on stuff like this though, I figure he's busier than 99.99% of people with everything on his plate.

Jeff's original proclamation post (found here ) indicated that there would be a "3-item set power available in 2016," and a "4-item set power available in 2021." That was from almost a year and a half ago, though, so things may have changed since then.
