TOPIC: Promo tokens from GenCon

Re: Promo tokens from GenCon 13 years 8 months ago #13
I would like to know who it is. Is he a player, or is he just someone who is trying to rob players? Wow, file a complaint, get that guy off of E-bay.

If you are looking on E-bay look to Gamingetc or almi or new moon Festival. They are excellent ebay sellers.

I did think it was very odd. He had more than one auction like that. I contacted him early in the first auction and explained to him the mistake in his decription. He said he was going to change his auction but he didnt. Then he posted the second identical auction.

I dont think the misdescription was an accident.

I remember thinking as well that the misleading description couldn't have been a mistake, since there is no way he could have picked those up at GENCON to play in True Dungeon.

That Fedrora Guy,

So what you are saying is you bought 2 - 10 packs of promotional tokens that aren't really tokens for the adventure, but say something like

True Dungeon seen at
GenCon Indianapolis
August 5-8, 2010

No equipment, gems or gold at all?

Some would think they were collectable at some time in the future.
The person wrote, ""I went to Gen Con this year got a large pack of True Dungeon PROMO Tokens, then slept in and missed my slot." This implies the tokens were for using in the game.
However, NO ONE can use these to play in the game and therefore, this is a falsification IMHO.

I'd let e-Bay know this loud and clear.
If you are looking on E-bay look to Gamingetc or almi or new moon Festival. They are excellent ebay sellers.

I would have to agree...I have found all three of these people to be very good sellers on Ebay and I see their lots are generally bid a little higher than some of the less frequent sellers. I have always gotten good service from all of them, and almi even threw in one of those promo tokens on an order prior to GenCon free of charge. No real value, just a nice touch of customer service.

AND you occasionally get lucky on there with good deals as well. I got a Dragon Tooth Amulet for $33 this weekend. Which was unusual because a number of the other items I had high bid on were outbid at the last second, so I know there were others going for those lots...

As for the promo tokens, I agree with the many others that you should appeal that. I looked at the photo and never went any further because I know what they were. But from the description of the lot that you posted, that is VERY misleading. I am just wondering who was bidding with you to get the lot up that high... The second lot of these went for over $40.

MU Skulls Rob

What a great community... I'm impressed at all the responses I've gotten and advice...

So, here's an update. I went over ebay's policies to lodge a complaint, and the first thing to do is talk directly to the seller (of course)... So I did... It went much better than I expected.

I got this response:
"I am VERY sorry. I was not aware that they were not usable tokens. I thought just the top token had Gen Con 2010 on them. send them back and I will issue a refund in a day or so (just have to get money in my paypal). once again I am very sorry"

Given how strongly everyone here responded, I'm still a little leery... But I am going to return them and expect my refund. If I don't get it, I'll be able go through Ebay Disputes or Paypal to make sure that I receive a refund.

lessons learned...

I wonder who was bidding on the other packs as well... the other two went for over $40... I'm still considering opening and closing a dispute with ebay just so it's on record in case the quick apology is just to keep my quiet... and if the other two lots have the same reaction as me, it'll be there as a record.

I'm not surprised the bidding went fairly high, even though the tokens didn't have game play ability, they are still fairly limited collectibles. I'm sure most of the people bidding on them were bidding because they knew they were the pretty limited availability promo coins. I was bidding on them myself, but $40 was way over what I was willing to pay. The seller probably would have been better off just listing them correctly, because they probably have more value as two packs of the limited edition promo tokens than they would as 2 packs of unopened regular Tokens.

Henwy is so right. If you are a novice and want some honest support, post publicly in this forum and nice people will come out of the woodwork. Many people here would give you a few common tokens that would effectively outfit a new player. Don't buy or trade anything until you have talked to enough independent people to get a feel for the value of specific tokens. There are a few traders to watch out for.

If I figure out who was trying to sell the elixir of vitality on Ebay for $285, no picture, no use description, and no returns, I will haunt them on this forum for a long time. This was clearly subterfuge attempted on the naive or unknowledgeable. The item did not sell even when the price was lowerd to $185, but there was still no picture, no use description and no returns. I hope my earlier post warned a lot of people. Who is balefirethecure on Ebay? If you know and don't want to post it, send me a pm.

On what day did you bid?

I looked back in my old E-mail and the person who posted the auction, replied to me that he would change the auction on August 16th.

I wouldn't worry about opening a dispute at this time, but be sure to KEEP THAT RESPONSE. He's admitting that you should get your money back, which will be excellent evidence if he does stiff you on the refund. Remind him on the refund if he doesn't come through in a few days, and go to Ebay a few days after that.

Good luck!

The first lot went on August 26th (Fedora's) and the second was on August 28th. Please keep us posted on the outcome to know if we should be wary in the future...

MU Skulls Rob
