TOPIC: Promo tokens from GenCon

Promo tokens from GenCon 13 years 8 months ago #1

So I purchased some tokens off Ebay thinking they were equipment tokens, but when i got them, they were a sealed 10 pack of tokens with each one having the Gen Con 2010 True Dungeon info on it...

Are these at all useful for anything or did I just sink my money down the drain...?!?

Unfortunately they don't have a use other than some people consider them to be a collectible. Were they presented on ebay as equipment? What kind of equipment are you looking for?

Kim

Heh. I was wondering who where the people bidding on those lots and what they were thinking. The item description seemed duplicitous to me (or maybe simply ignorant). You can file a dispute with paypal and as a buyer, they're almost certainly take your side of it.

I'm thinking about lodging a complaint through paypal... I opened one pack to see what it was and was really upset when I realized I got taken.

The description heading is "True Dungeon Token Gen Con 2010 UNopened PROMO stacks"

And the description is...

"I went to Gen Con this year got a large pack of True Dungeon PROMO Tokens, then slept in and missed my slot. Luckily I never opened my packs of promo tokens, so now I am offering them to you.

I am selling 2 UNOPENED packs of True Dungeon PROMO Tokens. Each pack contains 10 tokens each making it a total of 20 tokens.."

So, even though it said promo in the heading, the description leads me to beleive that the seller had planned to use them in the slot that they had overslept and missed... but THESE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN USED regardless of missing his slot or not... I paid $36 plus shipping for them...

So, useless, huh? Complaint worthy, or my own ignorance?
Based on that description it does make it sound like they were presenting them as tokens they had planned on using on their run, even though that isn't possible with those tokens.

Kim

Yeah, sounds like you can complain very easily about a misleading description. But definitely let it be a lesson that if you are not sure of anything in an auction, email and ask questions about it before placing a bid.

I think I will complain... I was thinking it was just my own stupidity... lesson learned about clarifying questions...

Kim - I'm a newbie... this august was my first GenCon and first True Dungeon... I loved it ...

I had a great group to go through with (DragonWard) and we made it through all of the puzzles to Smoak... Got very close to beating him, and I now know that if I had better understood my own abilities (as a wizard) then we would have done it. (I wasted an attack on the ioun stone using acid arrow when I should have used Magic Missiles... I was equipped with a wand of magic missiles and made two attacks on the stone with it before feeling my eye balls melt... :) )

So, I'm not sure what equipment I need. I'm learning more to equip myself as a Bard or Wizard for future attempts.

What I do know is that the $40 I spent on these useless promo tokens could have been better used...

Thanks for helping me clear this up.

They weren't even available at gencon. The only way to get them would have been at another con since they were advertising. Chances are good this person looted it from Origins. They had leftovers last year and this year too I'll wager.

That said, even if these were packs you'd still be daft to pay $36 for 2. The damn things retail for $10 a pop. Hell, I still have a couple sealed ones from my runs I didn't open you can have for less than that. Really, buying random packs just isn't worthwhile for the average new person starting out unless you're planning to sink a good chunk of change. Any collector can outfit you in uncommons for the cost of a single pack of tokens most likely and in rares for not hugely more, depending on what you wanted. You're better off just buying a starter set off of someone of which I and others have shit-tons.

If you tell people around here you're new, chances are good that most will help and cut you a very good deal. The rest will try to skin you alive :). To guarantee the former rather than the latter, do it publicly on the forums until you get an idea of the value of things and take it to PMs. It's very likely if you post publicly, you'll even get some donations. It's usualyl what's ended up happening in the past.

I did think it was very odd. He had more than one auction like that. I contacted him early in the first auction and explained to him the mistake in his decription. He said he was going to change his auction but he didnt. Then he posted the second identical auction.

I dont think the misdescription was an accident.

I would like to know who it is. Is he a player, or is he just someone who is trying to rob players? Wow, file a complaint, get that guy off of E-bay.

If you are looking on E-bay look to Gamingetc or almi or new moon Festival. They are excellent ebay sellers.
