You may not need the ammo, but you will need the powder.
Oh, and flints.
Oh, and the powder would need protection from moisture.
Oh, and the weapon would become fouled and require a spot of cleaning now and then to prevent misfires.
Oh, and the powder would make the room quite smoky and difficult to see.
Oh, and the twelve steps to reload.

But as long as I have the bayonet - Bring it on!!
How would people feel about the addition of primitive (i.e. arquebus) firearms into the True Dungeon mix? I think that they could be a great addition to the current arsenal of missile weapons out there, as well as offering some chances of some nifty critical hits!

Eh, while it wouldn't be the end of the world, I would prefer if guns (and arquebuses) were *not* introduced into True Dungeon.

On the one hand, it would be difficult to balance. Either they'd need to be heavily restricted (like the Heavy Crossbow) or they'd risk obsoleting most of the current ranged weapons.

And I do think it would be disruptive to the theme.

TD is based on Greyhawk which is more classic fantasy, though lately it seems to be heading in the direction of Forgotten Realms (high fantasy).

Technology *can* be integrated in fantasy worlds, but it really depends on the setting. For example, you can have ray guns and starships (Spelljammer), steampunk style (Eberron), or Renaissance era or swashbuckling type of primitive guns. But it just kind of feels "off" for the setting. (Yeah, Greyhawk technically had a small following with gunpowder, mainly worshippers of Gond but I never thought that meshed well).

So my response is "thanks, but no thanks." Next! =)

Probably a firecracker type thing for monks would be better.

one... I don't see why we "need" guns, but I can't say it'd be the first time I know of one in the dungeon.

but Guns are a serious breaking boint for fantasy buffs.. they represent the introduction of technology, and thus in many ways, the end of an era. I don't have an issue with them as long as their damage / RoF is balanced with other items, which would be hard to do, as Guns have been historically a great equalizer. Any moron can grab a gun, and so the years of training required to be a sword master, or a spell caster are made moot in the areas of damage dealing.

I don't see how we can introduce one, and keep things even, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

oh, and I'll take a ballista or an onager rather than the trebuchet... dungeon ceilings are fairly low, and I'd prefer the flat trajectory :)

After looking at the post with the list of weapons it occurs to me that a boomerang would indeed be a cool weapon to have a token of.

Kim

Firearms in D&D/True Dungeon do not have to follow their traditional historical role of being the great equalizer. They could easily be treated like crossbows (same damage and rate of fire) with the only added "change" being that they could be used by a broader range of characters. They could even be given a lower damage to balance out their use by more classes.

In the past True Dungeon has added some new weapons that were, for all intents and purpose, simply fluff. So, if one were to add firearms why not just treat them as a fluff weapon? Additionally, if people do not like firearms they simply do not have to use them. I am sure that there are some people out there who do not like some of the tokens and simply do not use them.

As for a technological breaking point, I simply do not see it that way because I have always viewed D&D as being a Medeival European based fantasy game with elements of Asian culture thrown in (such as the monk and some early 1st edition weapons, such as the jo stick). And True Dungeon has already crossed the Asian cultural barrier with the addition of the shuriken.

PS I would take a dagger over a trebuchet, ballista, onager, or even catapult any day of the week! None of them are really designed for use against single targets but are instead designed for use against large formations of people, are "fired blindly" against a specific area in the hopes of killing peole (such as lobbing a large ball over a castle wall), or are not actually intended for direct use against people.

bah you couldn't do anything useful with just a dagger...they're pointless in the "real" dungeon
=D =D =D

Hey, I actually once went into a dungeon WITHOUT any weapons! And I survived! That makes me one of the most awesome TD Players of all time! =D

The only way I could see a Trebuchet or Ballista being used in the dungeon is if one was already set up in the final room against the dragon. Like maybe it was dismantled or facing the wrong way and one team has to dismantle it and turn it to face the dragon (or repair it). You could even make this the puzzle part of the dungeon for that room so that the ballista would be the killing blow (or it takes out the wings grounding the dragon) if they get it set up properly in time. Otherwise the other team distracts the dragon and if they hurt it enough they get away before the Dragon eats them.

That would be so much fun!

Lady Myke

That would be so much fun! Here are your parts and pieces please assemble a working ballista...or die! =D Seriously though a huge puzzle like that where the whole team has to work together to put everything together would be all kinds of fun and if you get it done correctly then whatever effect takes place and you have done your part to defeat the dragon. Honestly even if they don't use this in the final room I think its a terrific idea that needs to be used somewhere if not this year then next! Love this idea!

Jennifer
