Next thing you know someone's going to be saying how that if its in the book then its allowed who cares what the DM thinks and then we're all off to defeat the evil necromancer Mort Kemnon....

Jennifer
No one is saying that. If they were they would be demanding that Jeff create tokens of their own choosing. Quoting evidence to support one's argument is not demanding that something be put in the rules just because it is "in the books."

As for weapons for flavor, ancient firearms are pretty damn cool!

It was a joke...a funny reference to a funny movie...alas my sense of humor is not appreciated (insert dramatic sigh here) =D

Jennifer
I am not familiar enough with the Eastern Monk's history to comment on their anachronicity.

Perhaps anachronistic is not the right word, because I mean "out of place" more than "out of time". Shaolin monks were certainly not running around Medieval Europe doing Kung Fu. Like Mock was saying, a gun is no more out of place than an Eastern Kung-Fu-fighting Monk. If you want to talk about anachronistic, then the Druid certainly is. The Druids were much, much older than even the Dark Ages. I don't even think the Druids were practicing, as such, during the Roman Empire. "Druid" in D&D is a made-up nature priest that has little to do with historical accuracy.

So, what I'm saying is, D&D is a fantasy world, and not really much like Medieval Europe. Druids, Monks, and other out-of-place elements are commonly accepted. So, firearms may be somewhat anachronistic (though firearms are very old, and the time span of D&D is very broad and loose), but that alone should not be a good enough reason to exclude them.

I'd rather have a trebuchet than a flintlock... um, unless the bad guy is within 100 yards of me, that is.

This reminds me of a discussion on an old Lord of the Rings forum sight just before The Fellowship of the Ring had been released. The studio had released a picture of Gimli with one of his axes and a small group of posters were extremely upset with the picture. They were very vocal in pointing out that there was absolutely no known historical example (in the real world) of the style of axe that Gimli was carrying and that he should, therefore, not be carrying such an axe! Many, many people were quick to point out to these people the irony that they would readily accept the ideas of dwarves, elves, hobbits, orcs, balrogs, dragons, wizards, magic, etc., yet they would not accept Gimli's fantasy axe!
Tell you what, binia, you take a trebuchet into a dungeon and I will take a matchlock. Then we will let the duel begin! =D

Also, check out this link: www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/lostempires/trebuchet/ ; If I remember correctly there is video of a reproduction trebuchet firing at a reproduction of a castle wall. The amount of damage that one missile can cause is quite impressive. In fact, throughout Europe there are castles that still have trebuchet missiles imbedded in their walls!

It's just my opinion. Y'all are free to disagree. I will still play TD if "guns" are included

I will add that I don't think TD needs yet another missile weapon and corresponding ammo set. But that too is just one man's opinion.

Well, your opinion is simply wrong. You will take your arquebus and you will like it, too!! =D Just kidding! Just kidding!

I just want to state that I completely understand and respect your opinion on this. My counterpoints were just be expressing why I, in part, not only have no problem with firearms in D&D but also why I love them. Nor was I trying to get you to change your mind. As I said I was just offering up a counterpoint. I do agree about about an additional missile weapon might not be needed at the moment, but as I stated in an earlier post I like the idea of a more powerful missile weapon (than the sling) that other classes can use.

Also, and as a general comment for the post in general, sling bullets could be ruled to work in firearms, too, thus eliminating the need for new ammunition for guns.
