TOPIC: True Dungeon in SoCal

True Dungeon in SoCal 19 years 4 months ago #1

I am going to GenCon SoCal with my boyfriend and his friends who have been involved with and playing D&D for more than half of their lives. I am really new to it all but am totally interested in everything and have recently taken up playing D&D miniatures. Anyway, we all got tickets for True Dugeon and after reading some of these postings, I am kinda afraid of what to expect. As compared to my friends and all the other people who will be participating--i know NOTHING. I wanted to share the experience with them and watch them and was hoping that I won't be killed off or something. I will not be required to act on my own, will I? Will they be able to help me? Will I be able to go through having extremely limited knowledge of all of this?

great....now after reading more of these postings....it looks like maybe I should sit this event out. ugH! I wanted to be able to share this event with them since it seems as though this will be an incrdible experience for all of them AND me......
i need advice on whether to sit it out or if I would be able to make it through some how.

Gemini,

It's been my observation that "newbies' tend to do better than those who are experienced with D&D. Why? Because the the experienced ones tend to over think their responces.

My advice is to GO, have fun and do what feels natural. You'll find the experience is great fun! :)

Absolutely, you should go! Fritz is right many times the people who have no experience with D&D do better since they have no preconceived ideas about how it is supposed to be. The event forces the team to work together, so yes you can get advice, and yes you will be able to contribute. We have had all levels of experience go through the dungeon with comparable successes. For instance, we ran a group of people from the Hotel (definitely non-gamers) through as a test run and the did very well, and were asking to come back through the next year.

So yes, by all means go, play and have fun!

As a volunteer DM from Indy, a True Dungeon player, and a boyfriend - GO. Just think before you act and make sure to tell your DM if you're interacting with something. Do that, and you'll make it through just fine. Oh, and make sure you have a good cleric. :D

thanks alot for the replies....and the advise.....I appreciate it....

So, I have gotten suggestions from my boyfriend on what I should be but I wanted more advise on the class that you all might think that I should try out. Remember I have little to no experience in this.....
And I know that you can be healed but do you actually get "killed off"...
does that mean that I have to leave or what.....
These may be silly questions but I guess you can tell that I am nervous about this>>?!?

No need to be nervous. The Cleric, Magic User, and Bard all have some sort of memorization/symbol word association ability required. Again you do not need to know D&D to play.

The Rogue and to some extent the Ranger need some manual dexterity (hand / eye coordination). The fighter and Paladin are probably the easiest to play but most often in danger.

All of these can be played easily by someone with no knowledge what so ever of Role Playing Games.

Keep in mind this "adventure" is fairly realistic in that you walk through, interact with, and are immersed in "the dungeon." In traditional Role Playing Games (RPG) it is paper, pencil, and dice. Here the activity is a bit more physical. When we talk about combat we are not talking about whacking each other with foam swords however, it is not that physical. You do not even have to "role play" but it is encouraged and does make the experience more fun. We do not require it, because we do not want to exclude those who may be turned off by the pressure of Live Action Role Playing (LARP).

Your character takes "physical" damage much as it would in a paper based RPG. Your character can be healed, and yes, can die. If you do perish in the dungeon, our contracted demon force will escort you to a comfortable waiting area where you can chat with other unlucky players as you await the rest of your party.

The only harsh rule we have is no pass outs for the bathroom. Our dungeon designers did not see fit to include porta-potties so if you have to go during the two hour event, you have to leave and can not re-join your party (you could sit it out as if you had been slain).

You will do fine, I am sure you will also have a good time.

Or you can just pee right there on the dungeon room floor. ;)

Gemini:

I am the wife of the TD "creator" and I have NO knowledge of D&D, other than from being around when they're playing and hearing some of the terminology. One of my brothers who has never gamed in his life went through at SoCal last year and really had fun. He was nervous because we threw him into a group of VIP's, so he was afraid his "no-knowledge" would mess them up, but they all had a good time. My advice.....just go and enjoy yourself. If you screw up, it's just a GAME and you're there to have fun. Besides, I think it's a safe bet that some of the other players will make errors, so it's not like you'd be the only one! Heck, you might outlive them all and think what bragging rights you'd have then!

Hope to see you there....

Lori is right. I have seen many groups with some experience players and some players with zero D&D knowledge and it is very often the completely inexperienced players who live the longest :)

Well, hello there. This is my first post and my first time finding out about True Dungeon.
I am a adult now, in my 30's who used to be a D&D player when I was young and in college. I even was even an ex RPGA member way back.
I was happening online looking at the D&D offical site, since I had just purchased the new rule books and was looking to get back into D&D, that i came upon the Con and TD. I cannot tell you the excitement that came over me. I WISH we had something like this back then.
I realize that the con is tomorrow and that pre-reg was a while back but, I wanted to know if I went down tomorrow (12/2) that I could possibly still find slots over the next couple of days. Also do I need to first get a pass to the con to sign up for TD? I am hoping that there will be slots available and I dont mind playing with any group.
I have read a couple of the post on here re:people worrying about playng and not doing well and I must admit that I can relate. I guess being older now my comfort level is much lower. Do groups depend on ages or if they are not coming in as a preformed group are they all mixed in?
I am very interested and will be coming down on 12/2 to see what happens. I hope that there are some openings over the weekend so I can see what all the excite is about.
I work in the entertainment industry and this is something I have always thought about back when we played as kids. If anything I would love to see how it looks and hopefully meet some cool creative people.
Who knows, nothing ventured nothing gained.
:D

Hey, I just registered for True Dungeon Tonight (12/1) at Gen Con So Cal. They have a catalog at the registration area that tells you all the times and different games. You fill out the number from the catalog on a piece of paper and give it to the cashier to pay for it.

You do have to have a badge first before you can do that. So there are two seperate lines, one for the badge, and one for events. It's kind of annoying because you can't pay for it all at once. There were not that many people there tonight so I doubt anything has sold out yet.

Good luck.
