TOPIC: Update on Mom's surgery

Update on Mom's surgery 17 years 6 months ago #1

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that Mom's surgery went fine. It took about 4 hours. The doctor said they were able to remove the lesion with no problem. She was awake and talking when I came home, and doesn't seem to have any neurological deficiencies. Sometimes things develop after a day or two, but if so it should be minor and temporary. She was in a fair amount of pain, but they were giving her meds. They will be waking her up every hour tonight to test her and check how she is doing, and will be doing a CAT scan at 4 am.

Thanks for all your good thoughts. I'll keep you posted on her progress.

Good that your mom went through that relatively well. MMM I wonder if the doctors were able to trigger a latent ability of hers by doing this surgery :) She may be more capable than when she went under.

Thought I'd post another update. Things are going well so far. She was having a little trouble with words today, similar to what happened after the seizures, but not too bad. For example, she would say "bigger" when she meant "smaller", and sometimes could think of the word but not say it. They aren't concerned, as it's pretty common due to minor swelling from the surgery. And she's not having any trouble at all with motor skills on her right side. She is having a lot of pain, but they are giving her medication regularly. She also gets tired pretty quickly, so we are taking turns visiting her for short periods of time. She is still in ICU until at least tomorrow morning, so they can monitor her closely, especially with some of her other health conditions. They are having to give her steroids because of her auto-immune disorder, which caused her blood sugar to go up, so they had to give her a little insulin. And she's still on a liquid diet, mostly jello.

I'm doing fine. Kevin and I went to see Eragon today (mom's orders). It was pretty good. I hope it does well enough that they are able to make the other two.

Wanted to give another update on Mom. She's doing well, but is going to be in the hospital for at least a few more days. She's eating regular food, and walking to the bathroom, but is still pretty shaky. The doctor doesn't want to send her home until she's feeling stronger, and also wants the speech therapist to work with her. She has to really concentrate to talk, and has trouble finding words sometimes (which is called aphasia). It's not something to be real concerned about, as she was told she may not be able to talk at all until a few days after the surgery, and she had the same symptoms after each of her seizures. The anti-seizure medication she is still on also "slows down" the brain, which made her have to think harder than usual to talk even before the surgery.
