a one year extension. Might this mean that Gen Con is seriously looking else where?

I would assume they would field offers form multiple locations, but those locations would have to provide something that would encourage Gen Con to move. I am not sure that any other city would want to undercut Indy on a long term contract, but would not be surprised at some lucrative one year offers.

Actually I would find 1 year offers at other locations to be a surprise. You want to know you can count on a convention coming back to log in that revenue and to get them into your schedule. Bouncing around multiple locations each year also I would imagine not good for us gamers. People learn what they like and don't like about a city after a visit and learn how to adapt (usually). If we were in different locations each year it would make it hard to learn a city. Just my two cents anyway. A city rotation might be 'fairer' but I don't think Gen Con is about being fair, they are about making money.

A few possibilities.

First, they may need more time to develop and evaluate other competing offers.

They may be trying to increase their leverage by not committing too far out. The year in question is 2021.

They may want to see what will happen with hotel inventory first. Many think the downtown housing crunch contributed to flat attendance growth. They may be seeing if they can work out some AirBnB deal as the housing survey hinted at.

Or something else entirely.

I'm of the opinion that more options are always good.

That said, a 1 year extension on a 4 year contract seems a bit strange. I don't know believe they couldn't get reasonable offers from other cities in 3 years.

I do wonder where they would consider?

I hope its not some place too humid or hot.

What ever city they would consider the space would have to be larger than Indy CC and have all the supporting infrastructure. They really want to keep it as centrally located as possible so their options are limited.

I would imagine that if they could keep the price the same, many other cities would be considered.

GenCon is a business, and should look for the best deals.

Personally, I would rather it be in a city that is at least a hub for at least ONE major airline.

Major Airline hub and sufficient hotel space nearby is what is needed.

I think that if they have 4 years left and keep adding a year on that we will still see a long term stay in indy, it just gives GenCon more power to request things

we go through this every few years; speculation of a gencon move. however there are a few "key" issues at play and not all of them are known to us, but we can again speculate.

1. money - look for the best deal.
2. housing - space to put everyone.
3. space - where would have the bajillion square feet needed for everything.
4. cost to the attendees - i want to go, but not at $500 a day for room and food.
5. location itself - if most of the attendees are from seatle, maybe key west isn't a good option.

JUST MY OPINION BELOW.
all of this is void if i cannot walk through a catwalk and readily access the event. i don't want to be a mile away or 5 city blocks or such. i'll just stay home.

now what cities can provide this? 50,000 hotel room? i know its less.

vegas, chicago, new york, atlanta, denver, LA, seatle, new orleans, san diego, dallas? where?

And the convention center being walking distance from the hotels is a must for us. Wipes out Chicago as far as I can tell?

So all the posturing that if the religious freedom bill was signed into to law with all the argument and discussion and protests goes right back to business as usual.

Good to see that our dollars and cents can continue to support intolerance and discrimination.

Make sure your papers are in order when you go to Indianapolis. Or anywhere in this land of the free.
