So I'm back from the family vacation to Maine. It was actually a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be. The weather was very mild and it was incredibly relaxing to just lie around in the shade with an offshore breeze while reading Jim Butcher's Dresden files. The only downside of the entire trip is that I think most people in the state must be illiterate or think books are used to prop up uneven table legs. I ran out of books after 2 days and visited 6 indie book stores, none of which had what I wanted. Apparently there are only 3 barnes and nobles in the entire damn state. I finally managed to find the one borders within a hundred miles and found everything I wanted in triplicate. God bless mega-book stores. Indies can suck my @$$.

I've spent the past few days catching up on sleep (it's amazing how I can manage to get sleep deprived on trips even when I get enough sleep during them). If you dropped me any PMs recently and I didn't get back to you, consider resending. Things got a bit jumbled.

Glad you liked Maine - Jen and I vacationed there all the time when we lived in New England.
When I was a kid, I wanted to live in maine. I had all these lofty and romantic feelings about the state. I figured I would live in large house on a cliff, overlooking stormy seas and dark clouds. I found the idea quite appealing at the time.

I spent a summer in Maine as a camp counselor. I can imagine that it can get pretty cold in the winter time...

It was already very brisk at the time we were there. I like it actually. I usually run hot so it was a nice change to always have a cool breeze handy.

We spent New Year's Eve 1999 on a beach in Maine - we built a small fire and had some champagne, but we still froze our butts off. The best part was that at midnight, we could see three separate fireworks displays.
Maine has tons of rural charm. I canoed and kayaked there many times in the 80s. It is what it is. If you want intellectual snobbery, go to Boston. Personally, I chose Nova Scotia for my escape location in the northeast. It reminds me of the midwestern US in the 50s, except with the house overlooking the Atlantic ocean waves breaking on the rocks below. The tall ships sail by every summer as they enter the harbor, and the guy down the street sells lobsters for $6 a piece out of the back of his truck.
Of all the traits of humanity, there is only one we do not share with other species, which sets us apart and makes us unique
-- the ability to imagine.

not too crowded? That's only two hours from Boston.

Maine is very nice - one of my favorite places to be in the summer. My wife has a lot of relatives up there that go way back and we used to go a lot before the kids. Its way too long of a ride now.

Next time you should skip OOB and go farther up to the Down East. Acadia is an amazing place as long as you avoid the traffic in Bar Harbor.

Btw, most of Maine once you go 10 miles from the coast is dirt poor with a high illiteracy rate. You go into a McDonalds and they have the picture menus on the counters so people can point because they can't read the text in the real menu. It's kind of sad.

Acadia is beautiful! My husband and I went to Bar Harbor for our honeymoon. We watched the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. It was early fall so it was a bit chilly and foggy but still beautiful :)

Jennifer
