The statues are of exceptional quality but otherwise unremarkable, they appear to be of similar construction of the ones you encounters earlier in the upper levels of the castle, though in this case non magical. The sarcophagus is of exceptionally fine quality and slides open easily at your lightest touch. Inside lies the dusty body of a knight clothed in once shining plate armor. His hands are crossed reverently over the shinning ruby pommeled hilt of a sword, its blade strangely absent.

Delmar pauses in thought for a moment looking at the hilt without a blade...

"wasn't there...Yes! there was."

Delmar hurries back to the other crypt, retrieves the sword blade that did not have a hilt and returns.

"What do you think Widseth? should we try the two together?"

"For sure. Try it. Strahd may fear this blade if pains were taken to separate it."

The hilt and blade fit together as if made for one another but something is still off, even to the untrained eye the blade is of much newer steel then the hilt.

Using all caution, I am going to check the stairs to 87 and 88. Anyone with me?

Breon follows Widseth and the others as they explore the stairs.

As your group approaches the stairs the astute among you spot the light of a candle depending the stair case accompanied by two human looking shadows and a single set of foot falls. You have only moments to react but the element of surprise is yours.

I whisper, "Quickly, let us put ourselves out of sight to either side of the stairs! That way we will be able to see who passes and not give up the element of surprise."

I move quickly to conceal myself and watch the shadowy figures with the lenses of clear sight.
