TOPIC: My wife is joining us!

My wife is joining us! 1 year 3 weeks ago #1

So my wife is going to give VTD a try with the holiday special. She's not a geek/gamer like we are (well, like I am anyway) - we say she is "geek-adjacent"). What do I need to do to prepare for the run?

1. Create an account for her on td.events
2. download the character generator app on her phone
3. Create a build for her - I can make an okay red-level build for her, maybe most of a stalker build. Can I only borrow tokens from people on the run with us? I was figuring on her being a fighter so she wouldn't have to memorize any spells.
4. Two tickets were transferred to me for the run - do I need to transfer one to her?

Am I missing anything we need to do? And advice? I think this is going to be a one-shot deal (the fun theme is a factor). I think she will be a big help with puzzles.

You don't have to create her an account, you can just have all tokens shipped to you, and get a bonus. Just forward her the zoom link when the time comes.

app or website, whichever you choose.

I think the spirit of the rule is only people you're on the run with. Note that your coach *could* ask to see anything, so that would be the best.

You can't actually transfer a ticket that has been transferred to you. You would have to return it to the person who transferred it to you, then have them transfer it to her.

Will you be playing from the same device, or separate devices? My husband and usually sit next to each other and play from my laptop when we play together. (We individually have our builds in the app on our own phones, though.) Other couples/groups play from different rooms/machines. If you are going to play together, you really don’t need to do anything but create a build for her on her phone. (With the possible exception of giving her a preview of how the event difficulty code and dice roller code work, since that can be confusing for new players.)

When we play together, I just put “Barbarian/Rogue” as our name, and that tells the Innkeeper that there are two players who are checking in.

My wife, Isabelle, has never done an in-person gaming convention but was willing to try VTD. She’s into boardgaming and card games (typically crushes me at Munchkin) but not terribly into RPGs. She’s loved it from the very first VTD. She’s now 8th level and should hit 9th level next year. She even committed to going to Ringcon with me.

In terms of specifics, your wife can share screens with you or do her own screen. Iz usually shares a screen with me. We each gave builds on our own computers or ipads for tdcharactercreator or the app. People can absolutely loan each other tokens for a vtd run just like in person.

I recommend any melee class as a good starting point. Spell casting isn’t bad at HC and lower and the memorizing isn’t that important (usually 2-3 pts difference.) The exception there is bard where the clues become more important at pre-NM difficulty.

If there are still slots open in your run, we could jump in so your wife has another spouse brought into the fold to relate to. Alternatively, we are hosting 2 runs with goofy themes that gave open slots.
