Thanks to everyone involved in True Dungeon for one of our favorite GENCON True Dungeon experiences ever! The DMs were all super helpful and nice, the NPCs were all amazing, and all of the volunteers we interfaced with were exceptional! Special thanks to Jeff Chandler for quickly fixing a small glitch!
We played two of the three Dungeons (I wasn't able to get a 10 person slot for Felurian's Feast). We ran on Hardcore, as we usually do, and while a couple of the combats seemed too easy, most were just the right amount of challenge. Some of the challenges (like ranged only and incorporeal 50% miss chance) made the combats a lot more interesting and challenging. We loved the physical puzzle challenges, especially the metal tray you lifted and lowered to guide the ball through the maze and the one where you lifted the wooden frame to maneuver the ball around the square enclosure.
The NPCs and the sets were all fantastic! My favorite NPCs were probably the Siren and the lady cut off at the waist, they were great at engaging the group in fun conversation through the combat. The Pirates were awesome also! One of my friends was sword fighting one of the Pirates with a loaf of bread, I really wish the photo policy allowed us to capture moments like that to remember the fun moments. I really liked the street sets on the one Dungeon, it was a fun change from the normal Dungeon settings, and really made you feel like you were walking through a town. I'd enjoy more sets like that.
One of my best friends quit True Dungeon out of frustration nearly 10 years ago, and he joined us for these adventures. He enjoyed them, and said that he really felt there was a difference in the Dungeons from then to now. He felt that the Dungeons were more fun, and that all the DMs were much more helpful now and less adversarial. I also made a change in the group token builds since then. We were very frustrated back then when most of us had melee focused builds and we had to do ranged only (I think the Dungeon that made him quit had 3 different rooms where our melee weapons were either not usable or very weakened). Since then, I changed the builds so that most classes are pretty good at either ranged or melee (one of the advantages of playing Hardcore instead of Nightmare/Epic).
We did the first adventure with no Wizards and the second with just one Wizard. I think that helped the combats from ending too quickly, as our Wizards are probably overpowered for Hardcore. I think before next year's GENCON I'll redo the Wizards so that they aren't quite as deadly.
So, once again, thanks to Jeffs (Martin and Chandler) and all of the True Dungeon DMs, NPCs, and volunteers of all sorts for an incredible True Dungeon experience! We're all looking forward to next year (I've already made our backup hotel reservation at Embassy Suites), and hopefully we can get full 10 ticket slots for all three Dungeons! It would be great if Felurian's Feast were offered again at GENCON somehow, because I heard that it was one of the best Dungeons ever, and there were a lot of people (including us) that didn't have the opportunity to play it due to limited ticket slots.
