TOPIC: Consumables given to new players - who is doing it?

Consumables given to new players - who is doing it? 2 years 5 months ago #1

Jeff was asked on Trent’s show about giving consumables to newbies at Gencon and whether it might get out of hand. His response was to just be reasonable about it and destroy/toss the rest (consumables from vtd.)

I had planned to get around 100-200 of those little plastic eggs (like from old school coin machines for little toys) and put 5-10 tokens in each. I was thinking 3 healing, a scroll, and ammo. The more rare tokens (woodies, charms of transmorph, etc.) I was thinking of getting rid of separately. Isabelle and I have around 500 tokens as consumables to give away like this.

It occurred to me that there are 4,920 slots sold. Pure guesswork, maybe 2/3rds of those slots are new players. That works out to 3,200 new player slots. Maybe another 1/3rd of them are doing more than 1 run (again pure conjecture), that would give us a net 2,000 new players.

If I’m personally giving away 100 of these, that would be 5% of all new players just from me. I know dozens of people in the same boat. Jeff’s point to overdoing this comes to mind.

Who else is planning to give these out and how much do you plan to hand out?

Fred

I have some. Nowhere near what you have though.

I'd personally suggest handing some of them over to coaches each day. They already have stashes of rare weapons to give to new players, having a small basket of pre-generated eggs like that would be a great addition to what they give out. Assuming the coaches would be OK with doing so.

You could also honestly setup somewhere outside of check in and just have a basket with a sign "free to new players, please take one"

I was planning on coordinating with volunteers as well as have either a basket or something like that for people to take some from. I originally thought of renting one of those giant gumball-type machines that could hold hundreds of these but the logistics are daunting.

I had a blast at last years Gamehole Con walking up to kids and new players I knew of with a large token bag and telling them to reach in and take a couple. It's like a treasure draw for them. The smiles I saw on kids faces when they pulled something cool was precious.

I believe a while back (before Gamehole Con 2021?) it was stated to leave Coaches out of this process. Maybe someone with a better memory or who is better at using the forum search engine can find the post.

I distributed from myself and others at GHC last year. I put 8 to 10 tokens in the felt bags and tied them shut. I hung around the check-in area and looked for groups of new players and handed them out. They were thrilled to get a bag of tokens.

I also supplemented the consumables with other tokens that were going to get mulched--whatever I had extra including weapons, armor, clothing items, etc.

I will be doing this at GC also and have some to distribute from others who could not make it to GC.

As a new player, this is awesome and I know my girlfriend and I will need all the help we can get for our first adventure through TD. If you see a tall bearded bald man super excited Thursday morning around the TD area its probably me.

I'll keep.my eye out, but know there are a LOT of gamers who fit that description.

I also gave some away at gameholecon last year. It was especially fun the day I was dressed as President Loki, telling people "vote for Loki" as I handed them a couple tokens.
