TOPIC: A way to sidebar some items.

A way to sidebar some items. 3 years 8 months ago #1

Was discussing with Chaosorbit that I thought it would be cool if maybe we had a transmute item that we could carry around 'extra gear' in. There are a couple tokens that I leave equipped 'just in case' that I really wish I could put something else there. Maybe if we had a blue/transmute item that let us carry an additional piece of equipment that we would be able to swap out once a game. Maybe make an improved version that lets you carry two pieces.

Or make a blue version that we could use the 'situational' effects from one item for the game. I'm not sure how to word it, or how to police it but I don't want it so people can meta and make themselves even stronger like stacking more healing, or damage, or AC or saves or base things, just a situational effect. -10 darkrift damage. sustain without air. can't be surprised. see in magical darkness. reduce falling damage. add a damage type. Something so we can still use the situational tokens in our bag but don't have to equip them to 'waste a slot'. Maybe make the light blue so it only works for one room, and the dark blue works for the game.

Case in point, I wear drow assassin armor because I don't EVER want to have to strain my eyes in a room because of magical darkness again, but because of this I'm 'wasting' a slot.

Thanks for the consideration.

I think this *could* work if neither item affec5t the party card

I like this idea a lot. Maybe a “backpack of holding.” I also agree that it shouldn’t affect the party card to keep life more simple. That would also allow some of the rules created for the GT amulet to apply and simplify app development.

The biggest concern would be to not make life difficult for the chatacter creators.

I think I like the second way I mentioned better. That way you’re not swapping gear or messing with the party card. Just tell the judge, ‘I’m using Teradach’s Satchel of Transference to add the see in magical darkness from my drow assassin armor.’

Seems like a cool idea, someone remember to bring the idea up during 2022 token development.

I know I have a ton of situational tokens I keep, like Goggles of Seeing, now regularly equipping them makes me miss out on something more beneficial like +2 to hit. But it sure would be great to be able to pull them out of a Backpack of Holding or Satchel of Transference, when that rare occasion of usefulness takes place.

Again agree should not mess with the party card, but probably be a little more a slotless token, like the many thing people wear around like a bunch of horns, pouches, and scroll tubes (or it even could work a little like a hitchhiking ghost). Now you would have a bag, backpack, or satchel where you could hold extra glasses, charms or ioun stones, maybe an extra pair of pants or a shirt. Something with an effect you would like to be able to access in that corner case.

Once per game you could pull the item out and use it.

And like CJ suggested it could be something that transmutes up to higher levels that allows it to become more powerful/useful.

At the entry level maybe it would be like this:

Backpack of Holding
Stow one other token in the backpack;
free action to use this item as if equipped for rest of room (1/game)

I'm sure there are better ways to word it just want to give an idea.

Wouldn’t want it to consume the item, just borrow the situational effect.

Being able to have a situational item you carry is a pretty powerful boon. I would think that justifies it taking a slot - likely a back slot for a backpack.

It could also have a transmute tree. Rare backpack allowing one defined item to be swapped out 1/game. Relic (3-4 point) allowing three defined items to be swapped out an unlimited number of times/game.

It would still only apply to items that are not party card impacting. In the example you gave, that would be party card impacting since the item you are replacing was party card impacting (a + to hit or AC.) Otherwise, you are gaining the benefit of both items. That isn't end of the world powerful but is pretty significant.

If it is in addition to a party impacting item (using Goggles of Analysis as an example), you gain the special benefits for 1 room only (like using Lenses of Clear Sight.) That might bump it's power level up to UR.

I would use/pay for an UR that let me activate the non stat bonus of a rare or lower item. I doubt I'd buy or give up a slot for it though, especially not the back slot. I kind of feel like that's getting into fizzy lifting pack territory again.

I would talk to your GM if you want to spend time in a dungeon not attacking or puzzling and swap in a new tokens from your bag, or while you do more mundane things like shopping or sleeping. If you’re in a room of lava and you would like to swap your grieves or shoes to allow for reduced fire damage and the ability to walk on lava I’m sure they might allow you. It might also not do anything though your DMs are pretty cool people if you take time to chat them up. Actually, all the volunteers are pretty cool, some just harder to talk to.

The official rule is no Swapping gear after coaching (allows for verification of tokens without taking the DMs time)
Note this was not always the rule, but has been for a long, long time.

It's the reason for the old text on token for Ring of riches.

tokendb.com/token/ring-of-riches/

That said, isn't a lot of this covered by psychic power?

It's a fun idea, and I agree, giving up a slot for it seems a lot.
