So my group of about half a dozen nerds decided to give this true dungeon a go this gencon. Suffice to say we all loved it, some to a greater extent than others. In fact, we spent the next day and a half periodically refreshing the gencon events listing on our phones in order to find another event to buy our way into for an extra run besides the viper pit we had started with. And now here I sit a few weeks later having recently finished reading the PHB cover to cover and starting in on the DMG while I have a 1k token order sitting in my cart waiting only on a payment from some MtG cards I've been unloading recently before I pull the trigger.

So, while I wait for that, I did have a laundry list of questions I was hoping some of the veterans out there could answer for me. I don't think they are things that were covered in the PHB, though if I missed them, go ahead and point me right back to whatever pages I might have glossed over.

Volunteering:
So, one of the things most of us came away from TD expressing was how much we were into the idea of volunteering at future cons, to the point where we kept harassing current volunteers asking them questions about the volunteering process. So, the few things I've thought of asking about since then-

1) So, when it comes to getting a room for volunteering, if a whole group of us all volunteers together, can we all end up getting roomed together? Also, how does it work out if a bunch of our group wants to volunteer but one or two just wants to do other things- are they stuck having to get their own lodgings independently or can they pay for their own lodgings at whatever hotel at still room with us (I guess I'm basically asking how it works out logistically if we want to room with a group where some are volunteers and some are not)?

2) Are there usually more volunteers than necessary or do cons typically have a shortage of volunteers? As in, if a group of us all wanted to volunteer, is there a chance that only some of us would be accepted as volunteers? Are volunteers accepted on a first come sort of basis or is there other criteria- such as years of previous volunteer experience. Even if we are all able to volunteer, how much of a likelihood would it be that we would all be able to work similar shifts so we can still do things together when not volunteering?

3) When would we typically find out if we are even accepted as volunteers for a con? Not necessarily an exact schedule so much as a flat yes or no to whether or not we'll be in the schedule at all (for this last gencon I wanna say we reserved our Airbnb back in the October of the previous year, which we obviously wouldn't be doing if we had rooms being given to us)

4) When you do end up volunteering, how much exposure do you get to all the puzzles in the dungeons? As in, if you end up a DM, are you basically going to have all the runs pretty much ruined for you, or only the puzzles for whatever room you are assigned to run?

5) How much say do you get over what you'll do as a volunteer? Do you get to choose your role or is it more if an assignment over where they best think they need you?

Gameplay:
1) So, how many characters should I put together builds for, and what classes have the most overlap in tokens?

2) What classes seem to generally have the most demand by players? Which ones are the least popular?

3) About how much gearing up should I be doing if I wanted to maybe run hardcore next year? Would it be reasonable to try it after one or two big token bundles?

4) What stats should I be focusing on the most? It seems from what I've seen that all the traditional DnD mental stats are basically dead stats that the game basically ignores, with people really just going all in on strength and Constitution.

Treasure:
1) So about treasure tokens- since it sounds like they expire, is there any reason not to always use them to pull from the boxes? Is there any sort of market for treasure pull tokens?

2) Going off of the first one, what sorta of things come out of the treasure boxes? Thus far I have only seen greens, reds and monster bits. What other sorts of things come out of those loot crates? Also, are the rogue boxes pretty much the same or are they just worse versions?

Tokens:
1) So, are there any particular vendors people would generally recommend as a sort of basic reference point? I figure the game isn't nearly big enough to have anything akin to tcgplayer as a reference. That being said, how volatile is the market as a whole?

2) When and where does the most buying and selling of tokens take place? Am I looking at something largely relegated to big cons or is this something that primarily occurs over the forums and eBay? Also, are there times when there are much larger surges of buying and selling activity (for instance, immediately post-con or when new sets of tokens are released)?

3) Should I be hanging onto completion tokens I get from runs even if they don't seem particularly amazing enough to end up using on any of my characters? How much do they typically end up being worth? I noticed the shop set up immediately inside the storyscape was offering a flat 100gp for any of them and didn't know if this was a good baseline to aim for.

4) So, I'm thinking of ordering a 1k bundle primarily to get my collection started, but also to help do some basic outfitting for my group. Which of the URs would people recommend I aim for? Frankly, at the moment I was leaning towards either two of the silver nuggets and two of the 2017 kilts or just one kilt and three silver nuggets. Is that a decent selection or am I just being a fool?

5) Going off of four, what sorts of things should I be looking to hang onto from my big bundle of tokens and what should I be looking to turn into crafting materials'? Also, if I wasn't into the idea of paying lots and lots of shipping costs, what cons can I do all of that crafting stuff at (I got the impression I can't just do everything at gencon)?

Misc:
1) I saw something about Golden tickets somewhere out there. Could someone give a quick rundown of what exactly those are and what they entail?

2) So, if I could only reasonably pick and attend two cons a year and based which cons I went to on which ones TD is at, which cons would be the best to go to for the best TD experience?

Which Cons to go to? Depends somewhat on geography. But ignoring geography I would say GenCon and Gamehole Con. GenCon is where you get to see new content first for the most part. Gamehole Con is very reasonably priced. Badges, hotel and TD runs. Al;so, ticket availability at GHC has not yet been an issue.

What is a Golden Ticket. On Wednesday night there are shakedown runs. There is a chance to get a golden ticket in orders placed before GenCon. Unless you are making a very large order its a very small change. There are usually some significant rewards attached to the GT Runs.

Completion tokens are sometimes useful for transmuting items. Same for monster bits. For example
tokendb.com/token/ring-of-heroism/
tokendb.com/token/icecrag-heros-earcuff/

Preparing classes. Fighter, Dwarf Fighter and Paladin builds are close to interchangeable. And Cleric is doable from that base build as well. Barbarian just needs a change of armor and a two handed weapon.

Trading, buying and selling. Lots of trading happens at the Cons. There is also a burst right after the first wave of tokens are delivered. And right after Cons. You can find sellers here on the forums. An options for acquiring URs is that some big buyers will sell you the right to buy a UR of your choice as they are preparing their orders.

What comes out of the treasure boxes. JediBCG compiles a listing every year. Several people with large numbers of pulls enter their results. Here is the link.

First of all, Welcome to a great game. I have been playing for about 10 years and volunteering for the last three or four years.
You have some great questions and it’s late so I’ll give you some short answers and my colleagues can give you some more detail.
As far as rooms, TD assigns 4 people to a room. The folks at TD are awesome is an understatement so if you request certain people in a room they can usually make that happen. I have a group of 5 friends and we all volunteer together at multiple cons and have Never had a problem getting to stay together. We also request that our shifts be similar and are always pleasantly surprised at the incredible job TD staff does of making that happen.
Usually TD can always use more volunteers. Of course they want the best quality people possible. Some positions are going to be better suited to someone with more experience but that doesn’t mean there should be any perceived barriers to volunteering for that position. When you fill out the application they ask you to choose your top 3 choices. Again TD staff are awesome and very accommodating so you should have no problem getting one of your three choices.
Typically when you volunteer you are in one area for the entire time although a couple of my friends have had more than one job at the same con but Never enough exposure that it would completely spoil the dungeon for you. They have volunteers do set up several days before the con but I can’t imagine even that would be a total spoiler.

I’ll skip down to the token questions, there are many fine upstanding token resellers here on the forums. I won’t name any of them because I would miss someone and don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. I suggest you go to the forum thread titled Token Stores and look around. You’ll find several that you’ll really like. Buying and selling happens throughout the year but exhilarates trying to con season.
Which ultra rated (aka pyp for pick your purple) to choose when placing a big order should probably be largely dependent on which character classies you’re outfitting. It’s also gonna be a very personal decision so you will get lots and lots and lots of suggestions here

That’s all for now. Again Welcome to what is really a passion for a lot of us.
Please visit my fledgling token store.

Volunteering: will let one of the seasoned volunteers answer. Bob gave some great ones.

Gameplay:
Generally good to have one main and one backup.
Lots of crossover. Harlax mentioned the heavy melee classes. Rogue, Ranger and Bard are fairly.close. It depends on which tokens you invest in most as to which you'll be able to use most.
I would say if the 4 of you have 6 or 7 classes built, that's good.
Also, try different classes. You may end up loving something you though youd hate.
There is generally debate about which class is least popular every year. Short answer is that they are all pretty close. Ranger and monk get taken a lot because they slide two pucks. Much like your gaming groups, there is almost always someone who wants cleric and paladin.

Stats: Wis controls will saves, Cha let's you equip 2 figurines, Int is required for one out of print token.
Str, Dex, Con have more in game roles. How much depends on class. Con is HP, which everyone needs.
We are always in debate about how to make int and Wis more important

(Time for an aside: your opinion is listened to, right here on the forums. Ask questions, weigh in, the powers that be are listening).

Treasure: tokens are good until end of origin next year.
Saving up to 50 can save you some time.

The spreadsheet is statistically accurate.

Rogue boxes are all rares I believe.

Vendors: many, many good people on here, as well as independent web sites. Ebay can be reasonable, but watch shipping.
Also there is a thread about completed trades. If you aren't sure, ask for references. Most prices are negotiable based on many factors
Market is most volatile due to reprints, which will be decided here shortly. Anything UR or under, except treasure enhancers, could be reprinted. If you're paying over 200 for a token, be aware it could drop 50% over night with a reprint.

Most activity pre and post gen con

Many pool their orders to get to a higher level to get the extra benefits.

Lots of trading after tokens first are delivered, generally in February.

Some times there are completion token or monster bit token transmuted.

Keep up.to red for several builds. Trade for your most useful URs.

I would say Ioum Stone Silver nugget x4 is a good choice, kilts are good too, though you will want 4 now and 8 more next year, to make the transmute 4 times (one for each of you) plus 4 ioun stone silver now and 4 ioun stone gold nuggets next year. This is where auctions may be your friend.

Your selections make sense to me.

GP is about 1.8 cents apiece, give or take. 500 GP is about 8 bucks. 100 gp for a completion token is a great deal for some, a terrible deal for others. Anything slotless is generally more valuable.

Welcome to a great game! I will write more in the am!

Volunteering.

Customer service is a great place to start.
If you like theater and/or role playing, NPC roles are great.
If you are a behind the scenes sort, being a blue hand is good.

More advanced volunteering
Coaching requires deep knowledge of the tokens, quick calculating skills, ability to interact with players and teach new players
Assistant Coach is a good way to get started down the coaching road and find out if it is for you.
Puzzle DM. Experience as a DM/GM is helpful. You will be managing a room and seeing a new party every 12 minutes.
Combat DM. Very challenging for many. Again managing a room, mulitasking, good with numbers, able to do all this quickly. Deep knowlege of the tokens, rules and how it all interacts.

There are roles above all these, but those are very advanced and specialized. Coaching Coordinators, Adventure Coordinator, Directors of various sorts.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

I believe bard and elf wizard are probably the least played class, but have no evidence to back that up. If one of your group is willing to go bard, try to find a blowgun flute or lyre of echoes so they aren't stuck just singing each combat room. There are some ultra rare instrument options http://tokendb.com/classification/musical-instrument/ as well if you are wanting to put a lot of money into it.

Hardcore is a difficult question to answer right now. It felt noticeably harder this year than in the past but it is unclear if that was intentional. For the lower hp class, you're going to want +7 to +10 hp. That will need either charms of synergy or some tokens that aren't currently available in packs. tokendb.com/affects-max-hp/increases-max-hp/ For melee you want to find enough strength boost to get to +6 or so to hit and damage. For casters tokendb.com/damage-bonus/spell/ and
tokendb.com/affects-class-talent/healing-spell-boost/

On token price when something moves from best in slot to superseded by a new token (or reprinted) value drops a lot sometimes. Oop best in slot ultra rares can get up in the $250-300 range. They'd drop to 100 on a reprint or 50ish if superseded. Transmute recipes that hit their end date can also cause the ingredient tokens to drop.

For your token selection, the nuggets are a good choice and likely to go up in value over time. The kilts in 2017, 18, and 19 are going to transmute into an Eldritch kilt of some sort, likely that will remove some of the -stat aspects of the current kilts.

Difficulty in a nutshell:

Non-lethal is a good, low-stress way to see the dungeon. It’s Normal with a net. If you die before room 7, you come back at 1 HP in the next room.

Normal is meant to be playable by with no outside tokens. You know, like Viper :)

Hardcore is where you’ll want pretty much every slot filled with a good rare token, or better. You’ll also want good organization skills. You need to slide quickly to get in as many combat rounds as possible. Time is more likely to whack you than the monsters.

As for Nightmare, that’s something you’ll need to build towards. You’ll probably want a half-dozen good URs to even think about it. In this context, Nuggets and other treasure enhancers don’t count as “good.” (But they’re very good in other ways.)

You don’t need two-dozen URs to play Nightmare. I ran Nightmare for years as a Cleric wearing “only” a Defender set, which is a great set, until my wife drew a Blessed Redoubt Plate from the treasure box. (Otherwise I probably still would.)

There are experienced players who do challenge runs with less gear than I’m suggesting, but that’s a lot of stress for sophomore players.

What to get? Gah. I’ll answer a different question. For one player getting a $1k, my four PYPs would be:
  • Silver Nugget-moar loot
  • last year’s and this year’s Kilts (because adding in next year’s will let you transmute an Eldritch leg item. Details not yet available.)
  • something flexible for your preferred class. E.g. Shirt of Focus for casters, Ring of Eel or Stone Giant for melee types, or maybe Medallion of Valhalla if you can’t decide.

But that’s not your situation, so grain of salt.

Welcome to your new addiction.

Volunteering: Go to tdvols.com and create an account. A lot of your questions will be answered by going through the process. They try to inform volunteers if they are accepted for a con as early as possible (several months before), but I know there have been a few times when it has been an issue with event registration timing. You can specify the role(s) you are interested in, but if too narrow, you might not get accepted. I wouldn't count on being able to choose which other volunteers you will work with -- at least not at first.

Gameplay: If I was equipping several friends for normal/hardcore, I would try to have a build for a barbarian (almost all will overlap to fighters &paladin), a light fighter (rogue, ranger, bard), a druid (use for a cleric if needed), and a wizard. Have a defender set handy if needed for those who can wear it. That would cover all the classes except for monk. Over time you will pick up class-specific items which might sway your preferences.

Get to the coaching room as soon as possible and you will get first pick of the characters. Of course someone might come in later wanting one of the ones you picked, but it usually works out in the end.

Treasure: There is a market for treasure pulls, but if was you, I would just use them yourself. Would you be happier getting $2-$7 per pull or having the chance of pulling a $100 or $1,000 token yourself?

Tokens: I would keep all of the completion tokens for at least a year to see if there will be a new transmute requiring them.

If you place your $1K order this year, you can still get last year's kilt and your TD experience will be much happier in the future. If you wait until next year, you will have a chance (not a large chance) to get a golden ticket. I'm guessing you will do both, LOL.

Volunteering
2. Four people to a room. You can ask to room with your friends. Been volunteering for a few cons and don’t think that your friends that are not volunteering can join but you can ask when you submit your application.

3. When do you find out? Usually within a few months. Volunteer registration for origins and gencon usually open up in January and will generally know for origins in April and gencon in May give or take .

You can goto tdvols.com now and make an account and fill out a profile information so when you can decide to volunteer the process will be quicker.
If your on Facebook there is a true dungeon volunteer page and a fans of true dungeon group .

Volunteering:

1) all you can do is ask. They usually try to room people together who ask. The earlier you volunteer the better

2) it varies con to con. Some cons get a lot of last min cancels

3) it again varies. I found out over a week ago I was accepted for GHC

4) you can have just your room to see what you are in for.

5) it really depends. I cant answer that. That is why they ask 1st,2nd and 3rd choice

Gameplay:
1) I have played a while so I have a build for each class. You want to be flexible. So as many as you can afford

2) most demand fighters….least monk/bard (what I have seen as a coach for 12+ years)

3) it is all about team work. You could have 1,000$ in tokens but if you don’t work well its crap.

4) depends on the class. Fighter-str…..wizard----AC and hit points

Treasure:
1) it fulx(the token market). If you are going to another con (within the same year, you can save them) if not always pull. Some people like extra pulls see below

2) I have seen URs relic and legendaries ( and more pulled). That is why some people like extra pulls

Tokens:
1) it fulx(the token market). It depends on reprints etc. I almost made a price guide a few years ago but I don’t theink the token market should have set prices.

Brad Mortensen (spelling)
I do. Many others as well. The one with websites go there. For stuff here
Forum---all---all things treasure tokens----token stores

2) pre, during and post are busiest. Selling, buying and trading happen all year

3) again that varies. The horn of blasting from 2012(I think) was at first blah. Now it is 100$ ish token. Just no way to ever tell

4) well, look at some of the sellers. You might be able to pick up those tokens at $125 ish each, get a few more URs(maybe same type) and get a bunch of rares to outfit

5) treasure tokens enhancers have not gone done in value(like the silver nugget). So load up on those for the other friends there are cheaper rare tokens(only give you one treasure pull, and cant get any other extra treasure)

Misc:
1) when the tokens come out (new year) there are 40 randomly inserted into the token packs.. it is a first look special run at GC.

2) I cant answer this I am biased on GHC and origins

Ok, a few more answers now.

My opinion in only, not necessarily fact of course.

There is a lot of trading in person at Cons. Most still happens outside of that though, as it us prearranged to avoid shipping, lost in the mail, etc.

Purchasing probably happens most via online tokens stores, ebay then forums. There are deals to be had everywhere. I just offered spme treasure pulls for a volunteer token and found a taker quickly.

Which PyPs to purchase depends if you're trying to get the best for 1 person or for 4 people. If 4 people, get all of them a silver nugget. If one person I would probably use Brad's advice above. Use all.pf the reds to fill out 4 classes worth of things, then look through the stores for other reds and green tokens to fill out builds, or wait until the 2019 tokens are out and use your next 1K.

Also, decide if you want to try to build up eldritch kilts or not. If you do, youd have to give up at least 1 silver nugget.

As mentioned above, hardcore is tough without a solid red build and some experience in the game. Things like sliding quick, knowing (or auto faiming) the skill checks, etc. Working together on puzzles, etc.

40 golden tickets are randomly inserted into 10 packs every year before GenCon. They allow one to play in a special run the night before GC, where there are often (but not necessarily) special prizes and treasure, and an advanced screening of the dungeon where adjustments can be made. If you buy your 1K pack now, there will not be one.
If you buy one on preorder for next year, there might be.

Which cons:
It depends on geography. Volunteers get free hotel, a free badge, a stipend, special tokens, free 10 packs etc. You still have to get there yourself.

Choosing without geography, I would say GenCon AMD whichever other con you choose. Origins debuted one of the dungeons from this season and had a special patron event this year. If that holds, many vets will try to be there again. Also, origins is about 25K people, GenCon 60K or so. Gamehole Con is much smaller. I honestly dont know about Pax.

Highest current probability of new volunteer acceptance, in my very unofficial opinion, is Gamehole Con.

Jeff originally spoke of running all three current year dungeons there. But he cut back to two. The stated reason was insufficient volunteers.

I left one volunteer role out my earlier post. Local Install Group. If you live near one of the Cons you can spend a couple of days before the Con and the day after helping build and tear down the Dungeons.
