TOPIC: The Value of Whimsy

The Value of Whimsy 6 years 4 months ago #1

The Adventurers were weary, having fought to the Astral plane - and now perhaps the end was in sight. A ship appeared through the darkness.

Snow fell upon the group, and one by one they succumbed to slumber. At the last, watching her party drift into sleep, a lone Adventurer fought frantically for consciousness, scrambling through her pockets for anything that might help. As her hand closed around a hard onyx figure, warmth flooded through her and she remembered an earlier time...

It was soon after her first adventure, involving a diabolic gnomish airship... she found herself at a merchant realizing she was undergeared for a life of adventure. As she perused the merchant's goods, her eye was caught by a small onyx cat - a good luck charm. She found herself drawn to it - recalling her youth and both her family's pets, as well as her excitement reading tales of Drizzt and and his companion Guenhwyvar, tales that fed her desire to become an adventurer.

When she picked the figure up, she saw the sidelong glances of her compatriots. This was not a fierce fighting panther like Guenhwhyvar, but a small house cat. Impractical. Frivolous. Whimsical. Feeling their judgement keenly she put the figure back on the shelf, looking once more at weapons and armor and potions and scrolls. And yet, when she brought her purchases to the merchant, the Onyx Cat was perched atop the pile of goods, despite the doubts of her friends.

And for years, the good luck charm sat quietly, unused, its silence proof of her impracticality. Until...

With a gasp, her eyes fluttered open, sleep warded away as the Onyx Cat pressed insistently against her hand.

Instead of suffering an icy defeat, she woke her friends and they emerged victorious against the strange creature on the ship. Saved at the last by Whimsy.

Thanks! The whole party was in a state of panic when the DM told us that everyone had failed the save. Not even the DM was sure what to do with us all!

But then I remembered I'd been carrying this token since 2014... and my re-roll turned into a 19, so I can only assume it was fate! :D

It's funny too, because I see now that the cat token is selling for a lot more than I paid for it, but I really did get some disbelieving glances from my friends when I bought it.

Loved the story. My party had a similar situation, except I used my spirit animal of Tortoise to negate the effects of that Will save roll. We were almost a TPK as well.

Yeah, I hope nobody did get TPKed in that room. While it turned into an epic story, going out due to a single die roll that's all about what gear you have, and not about what you do, sounds like an unhappy way to go out!

Fantastic Story! Thanks for sharing.

And even more so - Thanks for writing it up in Character ; )

(I always love imagining what our adventures would be like if they wereactually lived out by our alter-egos, instead of just brief forays into imagination)
