TOPIC: Multiple Devices for Character Gen

Multiple Devices for Character Gen 6 years 4 months ago #1

Hi, trying to use Jennings' Character Gen app and not seeing any obvious way to move characters between devices, such as an tablet and a phone. To make it worse, it's an iPad and an Android phone.

Is there a method or am I stuck manually transferring the data?

(Also, do i just need to show the party card screen this year? I used to print out the token spots and set all that up for the coach...how does that work with just the tablet/phone?)

Thanks!

I can't speak to that problem but if you have multiple devices you might want to consider the web app - TD Character Creator. It is located at: https:/tdcharactercreator.com I will also be offering the ability to print the character sheets at Gen Con (made by this tool).

The app support blue tooth transfers.

It also has an email feature.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

There is a method to move characters across. (the emailed files are compatible across IOS/Android)

On the iPad, tap on the character in the list on the left (not on the (I) indicator) It will highlight the character. Scroll to the bottom of the list of characters, and 3 options are available. Help, Email and Clone. The Email function builds up a general build of the character, but attaches a file with the full build, and enables your default email package. Just send it to your email address used on whatever device you want to transfer to.

To send from Android, highlight the character, do into Edit, and an option at the top of the screen is email. Same file format as for IOS.

To receive on Android, you need to detach the file from the email (tap on it and follow the prompts) Then go into the character generator, go into Add, and select Import. That will bring up the list of files available for importing from the email files.

On the IOS side, just tap on the file, and select the Character Generator, and it imports directly.

Between IOS devices, there is also a Send/Receive option at the top of the character list for sending it via Bluetooth.

Typically the coaches will accept the Party Card printout or screen, or just the stat screens for each character. The character build is available on each character if the coach wants to verify any tokens.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll try that.

If anyone has a coach's input on what 'documentation' is required to use the app on-site, please chime in, I'm interested. :) If I can avoid printouts, that would be good this year as I have a friend trying his first one and my tokens don't make a good version of the class he wants so we'll be filling out with tokens on-site.

No need for print outs with the App. Just show the coach your character on the app.

And then they will verify you have the tokens that make up the stats on the app.

This. :) Do I need a special layout or printout for the coach to verify the tokens?

Sorry for the confusion, just used to the old printouts and don't want to get it wrong with my one run this year.

The app is pretty much enough.

You will need to keep any tokens increasing treasure pulls handy for physical verification.

You should be prepared to show the coach any token you've put in the app as they are allowed to verify the full list, but it doesn't have to be out on the mat. In my experience, coaches will ask to see what's getting you to 5th level if anything and might ask to see some of the most important tokens impacting stats (ultra rares etc.)

When you open the character build, you see the list of slots and tokens for each slot. If a coach wants to check any tokens, he/she will just look at that list. No need to print it. The stats pages have all the numbers they need to fill out the party card, so everything you need is baked in.

It's all local on the device, so no need to worry about wifi or cell signal.

I thought I had sent in a message. The new app is missing eel skin gloves. I may have got sidetracked

There is a mat in coaching where you can lay out your tokens. (This is not the most current version, but it gives you an idea www.truedungeon.com/resources/item/51-character-class-guide )

Some players keep their tokens in binders of various sorts. I prefer the binders, but the mat is fine. If you use a binder, please consider placing your tokens in the order they appear in whatever character generator system you use.
